It worked for a thousand years or so--the strategy has had a good run. If it isn't suited for these times, I understand the reluctance to change.

Speaking about a thousand years, that is roughly the amount of time that passed before clerical celibacy became the unquestioned rule of the Church.  So pehaps the calls for reform are not about "modernization" but about renovation and return to the traditional ways.
