FONTANA, Calif. - A pack of escaped dogs mauled three young siblings in California, leaving a 5-year-old girl in critical condition, authorities said Tuesday.

Police Sgt. Jeff Deckers said the dogs — a mastiff and four pit-bull mixes — escaped a Fontana backyard Monday afternoon and attacked a mother walking with her four children.

Deckers said the mastiff pulled the girl from her mother's hand and shook her violently. She has a punctured lung, broken ribs and bites and is on a ventilator.

Deckers said her brother, who's about 7, also was hospitalized after needing 237 staples to close a leg wound. The girl's sister, who's about 8, was treated for leg and arm injuries.
Deckers said an officer shot one of the dogs. The others were impounded and the owners could be ticketed.

Damn dirty dogs.  You don't read about escaped cats doing that. :glare:

Only because they're too small. Every cat yearns for its owners death by their claws.

That's because cats are crafty and cover their tracks better. Ever heard about people disappearing, never to be seen again? That's cats' work.

Nice frigging dogs! The owner who keeps such dangerous animals needs to be put away. Dogs need to be destroyed but someone trained/made them to be so malevolent as to pull children out of mother's arms and maul them. What a sick, disgusting idea, to have ownership such dangerous creatures.

You don't have to train mastiffs and pit bulls to do stuff like that.  They are bred to do that kind of thing.

If the authorities don't have the balls to outlaw these breeds and euthanize all the existing ones, then at least they could pass a law recognizing that these dogs are deadly and that the owners are criminally responsible for anything the dogs do, regardless of any precautions the owners may take.

There's currently a public vote in Vienna about whether or not the ownership of certain dogs (pitbulls, mastiffs, ...) should require a special license.

Reaction of the head of the animal protection group, "Silly, there's not such thing as an 'attack dog'."

They're bred to be able to do that; an effective attack dog still requires training.  I'll grant that it's easier to bring out in a breed designed for attack/repel functions, but even in cases where they weren't "trained," there's still typically some sort of neglect involved in their upbringing.

Hell, if breeding for antisocial tendencies is your criteria, you'd need to outlaw dalmatians as well.

The Dogs are rising up agaisnt us!

QuoteLJUBLJANA - A Slovenian who saved his three dogs from being put down for attacking humans was himself mauled to death by them, police said Wednesday.

"Three dogs bit their 52-year-old owner to death in Ljubljana yesterday," police spokeswoman Maja Adlesic said.

Four years ago, the three bullmastiffs attacked and seriously injured a passer-by outside their owner's house. They spent years in custody pending legal hearings, but when one of them attacked a dog handler, authorities ordered them to be put down.

Their owner, a doctor, succeeded last June in his legal appeals to get the dogs back, sparking a national controversy. After his death, an opposition party said the agriculture minister should resign for failing to stop the dogs from being released.

The dogs attacked the man in his garden Tuesday, killing him before the police arrived. All three dogs were put down following the attack.

They do require training, so that they don't maul and kill random people or animals.
