Another question, what is the point of allies? I started two wars, and neither time did my ally join in. Then I got attacked, and my ally didn't help either.

Deterrence.  I think the AI takes your ally into account when deciding attack/don't attack.

My allies usually join, as long as the target is not too far away from them.

I have to admit I really don't bother much with alliances in any Paradox game.  Too much bother, for too little assistance.

I'll try and get small (but independent) powers that I am trying to woo into alliances with me so I can protect them if attacked, but I don't bother trying to ally with other, large powers.

When you have one poor Irish province and that is it, you need all the help you can get. You really have to play your cards right to conquer someone.

I've played 1337.  It's fun to play the Kingdom of Jerusalem.   :)
