Keeping fonts

A minor problem here, installing fonts on XP properly.
I've downloaded the font I need to use and put it into my fonts folder. It then becomes available in programs and I can use it just fine.
However.
When I restart my computer and open the programs again the new font is nowhere to be seen- yet it remains in the font folder.
I have to delete it from the font folder and reinstall it before it shows up in my programs again.

Any clues what on earth could be going wrong here?

why not go to control panel, fonts, and install the font properly?

Its odd, trying to install them through files>install doesn't seem to detect them.
It does much the same thing as dragging them in from what I can remember though.
