It's only a matter of time before someone brings up punchcards.

Well, I didn't work with punchcards (tough some people still did) but I did train with them circa 1980-81. Back in 1982-83 the department I started working for used quite outdated tech, we still worked on paper printouts and used teletypes. And let me tell you, the Good Old Days weren't good at all, forget the theorem of G.O.D.

Punchcards, teletypes, paper printouts... were a royal pain in the ass!

Pft, punchcards.

Clockwork FTW.

Sams Club is offering 3 pack of Windows Home Premium upgrades for $114.99.  Is it worth it to forego Ultimate for my gaming computer, to get Home Premium on my home, work, and wife's computers?

Why would you need Ultimate for a gaming PC?  I don't think any of the Ultimate-specific features are related to gaming capabilities, are they?  IIRC it's all backup, security, and multiple languages shit.

There is no backup in non-Ultimate versions?

I think it's better backup or something, I dunno.  Or maybe you can only do encrypted backups or some shit like that.

Survey says "no", but here you go so you can make an informed decision:

MS probably has similar comparative charts but I would guess is more likely to color things so it looks like you need it.

So, verdict?

I like Win 7.
No, do I fucking need Ultimate?

No.  I had Vista Ultimate & now Win7 Ultimate.  Didn't really use any of the 'ultimate' features.

Bitlocker and file encryption.  Home Premium doesn't run "XP Mode," so I'll have to see how it handles some of my older games.  Home Basic is the only one that strips graphics capability, and that's only available in "developing markets," not the US.

I read somewhere that "XP Mode" doesn't work for games...

I believe it's meant for homebrew "productivity apps," typically built in C++ or Visual Basic, that require runtimes; some game developers in the XP and just-pre-XP eras used a lot of sloppy coding that worked in a similar manner.  I have a feeling games requiring MSCRT.DLL are going to need to be run in XP mode. Again, at this time, I'm just speculating while I'm waiting on my copy of 7 (which shipped yesterday :yeah:) before I give you any real definite answers.
