Kournikova was trash.

Unfortunately so is women's tennis at this moment. After Henin's departure, anarchy ensued in the top ten: there is not a single great tennis player, only a lot of good ones, that share among themselves on a weekly basis the first places. At this moment Dinara Safina, another mediocre player that never won a Grand Slam Tournament, is no. 1. The level of performance is so low that Kim Clijsters managed to win the US Open, after a two year absence, and is now in the top 20, only after three tournaments.

And Kournikova being compared with Graf... are you crazy? Steffi Graf was like the freaking Tennis Goddess: 22 Grand Slam Titles on all surfaces (including a Golden Slam, a performance that is still singular in tennis). She battled all the great ones, from Navratilova, Evert and Sabatini to Sanchez, Hingis and Seles. Kournikova is mediocrity with a nice face.

Kournikova was trash.

Maybe but she was not a terrible Tennis player.  I do not know her personally.

Are you not literate?  Can you not read?

I said I am not comparing Kournikova to Graf as Graf is one of the all-time greats and clearly she is was not up to that standard or even an elite standard much less to a Graf standard.  How you got that anybody WAS comparing her is...well...I am glad English is not your first language or I would be embarrased for you.

It wasn't directed at you. There was another comment that suggested Kournikova is 100 times more famous than Graf. And I take it hard because Graf was my first love in tennis.

As for the language commentary, don't make me laugh. Pigs will fly the day I'll try to compete with an american in a language competition.

But she is.  Kournikova is a D-list celebrity, whereas Graf is merely a tennis legend.  Celebrities are far more famous than people who play obscure sports really well.
I do not hate you, nor do I love you, but you are made out of atoms which I can use for something else.

Wow the old 'LOL AMERIKUNZ ARE DA STOOPID' quip.  At least be more creative in being a moronic bigot.

Anyway I did not take seriously the whole 100x more popular thing.  Kournikova is a hasbeen as far as celebrity goes.

Since when did popularity have any direct connection with being good at your chosen profession, anyway?

In other news, there are rumours that Henin will also announce a comeback today...

I disagree with you in regard to the Williams sisters (even though I personally dislike them.) As for the rest of the current top ten, you could not be more correct if you tried.

The Williams sisters also get bonus points for playing in doubles tournaments, as all the great players of the past did. Most other top ranked singles players seem to feel that doubles are either beneath them or too much effort these days.

Sports is a crazy thing.  If a lawyer or investment banker became recognized as the 8th best in the world at what they did would they get crushed, called shit, and worthless?  No, being the 8th best at anything in the world an one point in someone's life is pretty damned impressive.

Also why do we take it so personally if an athlete doesn't strive to be the absolute best in the world?  If the above banker worked just hard enough to set himself and his family up for life would he get crushed too?  Not likely, but if an athlete does it, people are personally offended by it.  Makes no sense.

Wozniacki won her 2nd  match in the Doha WTA tournament, and what a spectacular match that was. Wozniacki had a thigh injury that was clearly quite painful. I've never seen anyone cry that much, scream that loud or look so tormented in any sport before, but she just kept going.

How old is that pic in the first post? She's definitely bulked up since then. /sigh

I'm sure Monica Seles appreciates her prize for 2nd place: a set of steak knives.
