The Close Talker

An uncomfortable social event happened to me today in which a female acquaintance spied me outside for the first time after a long hiatus. She screamed out my name from afar and began to run at me. Remembering that she was a hugger, I braced myself for the hug from a girl that I barely knew.

However, what followed I did not expect. She commenced speaking to me at what seemed like only an inch from my face. I was shocked and immediately began jerking back my head. However, I recovered my cool and finished the short conversation while staring into her pores.

What is everybody's experiences with close-talkers? I like personal space because I do not know if my face is dirty, there is food in my teeth, or my breath smells (not to mention what the other person's attributes might be). Is close-talking the norm in other cultures? I remember my last close-talking was with a 60-year-old Italian security guard at my school when I was 16 or 17.
I know the girl is quick with becoming touchy-feely (in a non-sexual way), so perhaps close talking is a natural product of that.
