I don't really see how it is different from reading a map or putting on makeup in the car.

In both of those cases, you've got some idea what you're looking for. You're glancing at something just to confirm what you're doing, and you can keep concentration elsewhere.

From personal experience, I thought that would hold true with texting, but I found it took so much concentration to manipulate the cell phone and read the texts that I got spooked about how distracted I was and stopped.

Yeah, I really don't get it.  Talking on the phone I understand, at least you have the illusion of being able to observe around you.  But with texting, shouldn't your survival instincts kick in at some point?

Not really. Which is why people caught texting or putting on makeup while driving should be put to death.

Really?  I found it rather dull.  Slow-motion crashing is so two years ago.
