Politicans understand that any choice they make will piss off someone somewhere, so they spin their position to make it sound warm and fuzzy. 

They also understand that circumstances (public opinion in particular) can change, so they try to leave some wiggle room.  That's honest, more honest than saying "I will renegociate NAFTA" then later saying it was taken out of context or whatever.

Tim Russert would ask clarifying questions; if the guest waffled he would repeat it, if the guest waffled again he knew there was no point in going on.

His show was a good source of information, but you had to read the subtext, much like diplomatic language.
