The DoomRL is good fun. Other roguelikes could work too, and if you play them all in ASCII, then just tell anyone that happens to see them that its code for a project you're working on.

Is the original MOO worthwhile then?
I always just envisaged it as a less good MOO2.

Hard to compare them really. Despite the similarities they play very differently. Both have their strengths and weaknesses. I like em both, in fact I think I´m gonna fire up ol DOSBOX for some right now.

ZAngBandTK. It's a rogue-like engine, but it added a simplified UI and tilesets of graphics to make the map more understandable.
