NDP to consider name change

The federal New Democratic Party will consider dropping the word "new" from its name when delegates gather for the party's annual convention in Halifax in two weeks.

The 1,000 delegates expected to attend the conference will either move to adopt the abbreviated moniker right away, reject it, or appoint a task force to study the name change.

Ontario NDP Brian Masse, who is in favour of a change, said the current name is dated.

"Is it another 50 years that we stay 'new'? Another 100 years?" Masse told CBC News in an interview Tuesday.

"We've established ourselves in the mainstream, and [we're] going to be there for the future, so to me it's about an exciting opportunity to talk about renewal."

"A number of different riding associations ... have put forth motions" calling for a name change, Masse said. "It will be up to the grassroots" to decide what to do during the Aug. 14 to 16 convention.
Parallels to U.S. Democrats?

One of the keynote speakers at the convention will be Anita Dunn, the communications director for Barack Obama's U.S. presidential campaign.

Masse dismissed suggestions that by changing its name to the Democratic Party, the NDP may be trying to bask in the reflected glory of the Democrats in the United States.

"I think Canadians will know the difference between Barack Obama and [NDP Leader] Jack Layton," he said.

When asked of the likelihood of a name change, Masse responded: "it's hard to say."

But he added that regardless of the outcome, provincial wings of the NDP should be able to make their own decisions about a possible name change.

The NDP's roots go back to the early 1930s, when a coalition of western socialists formed the Co-operative Commonwealth Federation.

The CCF changed its name to the New Party in 1960. The following year, the name was changed to the New Democratic Party, and Tommy Douglas was chosen leader.

Well? the CBC boards are weakass. Languish is the place for stories like this.

Is Jack Layton the new Obama? ummm not likely but NDP has a third place taint that's impossible to shed without such a thing... simply saying Democratic though would feel wrong what with our kissin cousins to the south kinda having trademarked that word/phrase...

I'd approve of The Canadian Democratic party, or they could go back to the brief early 60's name "The New Party"  but that sounds to airy fairy to work.

CDP?

i guess that's better

They wouldn't use any initials if they were smart don't use outmoded branding.... only Balkanized countries with minority governements have an alphabet salad of parties.

in reality they'd want to be called Democrats or some other variant i'm not clever enough to make up and earn millions for doing so.

Yeah, like Germany.

Exactly. You can't want to be Germany. Germany is the ugly chick at the Prom.

What new names have the Communist Party taken in Eastern Europe?  Use one of those.

well, it's not like the fed wing has any brand strength to dilute. the DP is fine. NDP could still work, but they would have to promise a "New" kind of Democracy and not just be a 50 year old "New" Party.

Layton has been around for a while .. still though I do not see an immediate successor. Overall he's been a great plus for the party, but I think he's lead them to their electoral ceiling. But as long as the balkanizing Bloc is around, that's enough to ensure some power in fragmented, majority-adverse, Ottawa

More important than the branding cover story is what the party is supposed to be about. are they going to change ideology and policy to reflect their "New" image?

NDP is successful provincially, usually because they become more centrist and squeeze out the Liberals at that level.

Nothing especially unusual or whacky about this.

Rebranding did wonders for the Progressive Conservatives, who realized they weren't so progressive after all.

I agree that CDP sounds too much like an East German party. They should stick with Democratic Party. Has a better ring.

Stupid NDPers.  The 'New' isn't the age of the party, but rather the new twist they bring to Canadian politics:  Class warfare and wealth destruction.

Brand yourself however you like, the NDP and the Liberals can fight each other to their mutual destruction, as far as I'm concerned.
I do not hate you, nor do I love you, but you are made out of atoms which I can use for something else.

crazy canuck

I hope they change their name to the Democratic Party, then whenever somebody from the NDP accuses others of trying to Americanize Canada we can all have an even bigger laugh.
