I meant inter country rivalry, not football.

They're just recalling the Peninsular War.

In several surveys, the overwhelming first choice for what makes Canada unique is multiculturalism. This, in a world collapsing into stupid, impoverishing hatreds, is the distinctly Canadian national project.

Quote from: Zoupa on July 14, 2026, 05:36:09 PMFor some reason Spanish internauts think there's this intense rivalry with France. It feels quite one-sided.

There are many great rivalries that are mostly uni-directional.

I saw Mbappé quoted as follows:

QuoteFrom the start, we went into the press with 3 players against 2. We messed up vs Spain, you need to press 1v1. Even when we recovered the ball, our ball touches and movements were not worthy of a World Cup semi-final.

I think we didn't play our game, technically and tactically. When you don't do what you're supposed to do in a World Cup semi-final, you don't win. Spain stayed true to their game plan. If we are honest, we did not have what it takes to go to the final.

I can respect that.

If only that! Swear to god, every guided visit to a historical monument in Catalonia nearly always includes "...and then it was sacked by the French"

So yeah, we have a big "historical" rivalry in the literal sense of the word, since we fought countless wars throughout history, but that's about it. Football rivalry is big, though, given the ascendancy of the French team and that we have played them often.

I'm in the south of France by the Pyenees and saw a small monument to the Aragonese "who were always welcomed by the Bearnais". I hadn't wondered who they were fleeing from
Let's bomb Russia!

Zoupa

The Castilians, of course

Jacob

Just walked into our IT office and saw a couple of our Irish staff decorating with English flags. Just for tomorrow.

I can't fault the French for losing.  I had a hard enough time staying awake while sitting on the couch, imagine having to run around for 90 minutes while watching Spain play.

Zoupa

They are symptomatic of haramball, but it's probably what wins competitions sadly.

Threviel

Dang, Spain is impressive. Let's hope FIFA allows them to win against Argentina.
