The metaphor is a bit mixed because Palantir is associated with Thiel who has a different LotR villain association than Putin.

Meh, I grew up thinking nuclear annihilation was a certainty.  We were constantly reminded how close to midnight we were. The world went through a period of time believing that threat was behind us. It wasn't and now we go back to that status quo now that the interregnum of world cooperation has ended.
