Horrendous story. From what I've seen elsewhere this man seems to have been pretty vulnerable - some of the details remind me of cuckooing:

My first thoughts on reading about this guy with a big following on a streaming app I've never heard of dying were, isn't that the sub plot of that Black Mirror episode with Chris O'Dowd?

My first thought as well. Possibly prompted by it being mentioned in the first line of the article.
