Have you considered not listening/watching or reading about the news for an extended time?

If so what did you find were the benefits and costs?

Is there a moral position as regards being engaged with the news?

I ask because I'm doing a little bit of UK travelling and haven't bothered now with news for three consecutive days; And I'm not missing it.

Though clearly I'll go back to following it, though maybe in a reduced fashion, maybe record the main tv news and watch it on fast forward, only read the BBC domestic news coverage??

I have for long periods of time in the past, especially during his first term. Because really I just want to watch sports, play video games, and hang out with my family and friends and be left alone.

But recently what I am seeing is so traumatic that it almost feels like my duty to act as a witness.

For what I do professionally I need to keep current with the news of the day and so ignoring the news isn't really an option. But maybe when I am finally successful in a future attempt to retire

I have spent time on a "cleanse" where I don't follow the news and social media (or dial it back severely). It's been positive for my mental health and life, so I've been happy with doing so. On the other hand, I think it's my duty be an informed and engaged participant in our democracy, so it's not a long term thing.

So basically I take the occasional vacation, which helps.

I ignore the day to day. Tariffs on, tariffs off; that stuff just isn't worth paying attention to because it'll change by tomorrow.

The big stuff I'll see here or elsewhere. I try not to doom scroll because it stresses me out and there's little I can do, but on bad days it's hard.

I have come to believe that the whole world is an enigma, a harmless enigma that is made terrible by our own mad attempt to interpret it as though it had an underlying truth.

Being lazy is bad; unless you still get what you want, then it's called "patience".

I follow the high level details only.  I really think it's bad for mental health to be too addicted to news.  When you limit yourself then you stay centred in the things that matter in your daily life.

I joined x for the first time last year mainly to follow hockey related things, which it's great for, but even limiting myself to hockey there's just too much toxicity on that platform so I deleted it this year.  X is like the negative energy goo in ghostbusters 2.

I check news two or three times a day. I avoid comment sections.
I am, somehow, less interested in the weight and convolutions of Einstein's brain than in the near certainty that people of equal talent have lived and died in cotton fields and sweatshops.

I try not to read or watch too much news outside of work, but when you have the Norwegian news agency NTB's feed straight into the workflow, it is sort of difficult not to catch some newsonitis. They should develop a vaccine. Or wait, those are there, reality shows.

Euphemism?

now that's a good name for a cat.

anyways: get a bit of news from here (the grapevine), I read just enough of the Flemish version of 'The Times' (De Tijd (an actual link to prove the newspaper exists :D) to keep up, try to get the editorial headlines of the day via radio. Follow Ukraine via youtube (Jake Broe, The Ukraine Map by 'Ukraine News Tv' and the occassional Ukraine Matters).
Screw social media, getting rid of Facebook in 2013/14 was such a relief. Twitter/X is now useless for the info I want and I woefully missed the boat on all the rest (probably for the best, but damn does it annoy me at times how some people just shovel money into their wallets via that. bleh)

All in all, less news followed than a few decades ago.

I've thought of this, but immediately acknowledged its impossible for me.

It is far better for the truth to tear my flesh to pieces, then for my soul to wander through darkness in eternal damnation.

Jet: So what kind of woman is she? What's Julia like?
Faye: Ordinary. The kind of beautiful, dangerous ordinary that you just can't leave alone.
Jet: I see.

Yeah I can't help myself. Plus there is an argument, I think, in times like these that to be a responsible adult especially if you have a family is to stay up to date as the world order tumbles back and forth, so you can at least catch a bit of a hint of when it's about to fall over.

But, it sure is exhausting nowadays.

That's the trick. I have a couple of browser extensions that hide them, works pretty well.
