He was a force of change in a very conservative auto industry, no way would EV cars progress that fast without his vision.  I know how conservative industries work, they will stifle innovation almost indefinitely until outsiders force them to get off their asses.  I also don't buy at all into theories that he deserves none of the credit for this, I think that's a convenient explanation that became popular when he took a public hard turn to the right.

The trouble with promoting electric cars is they're a bit of a dead end that precludes the actual societal change that we need.

No doubt if you're an individual with money and need a new car then electric is the way to go. It's better than petrol.

But getting everyone to switch over... The world just doesn't have the resources for this.
And getting too hung up on the easy answer of just swapping out ice for ev and otherwise keeping everything exactly the same means we aren't doing enough on the actual solutions of building smarter cities and better transit.

We just had a SpaceX launch this morning, those are fun.  Musk did help the economy here by increasing operations in Florida after the Obama Administration shut the spaceport.  (Of course today he's cutting NASA and harming our economy, Musk gave and Musk hath taken away, blessed be the name of Musk.)

Starlink does have applications for rail (especially in the field of mining.)  Previous satellite systems had too long of a delay to be useful for a safety critical system, but Starlink meets our criteria.  The cost is still a concern, but weighed against the cost of building a radio system in a remote area it could be worthwhile.

I think I most admire Musk for realizing that an electric car could be a status symbol.  Previous electric cars or hybrids were squarely aimed at the middle class, but only the wealthy could afford a roadster or an X class.  Giving Bobos the ability to flaunt both their wealth and their enlightenment was an incredible marketing idea.

Maybe though despite all his wealth, he really is just one man whereas Facebook is made up of billions of people and bots.
