Danish election Nov 1st, 2022. Here's the traditional poll.

Also, here's what each of the leaders think is the most important thing at stake in this election (not in the same order as the candidates):

The most important thing in this election is...

"... sense of safety and confidence for Danes."

"... we've got a handle on the economy."

"... to solve challenges on the climate, and to tackle poor conditions for children and youth."

"... solve current crises via collaboration across the political blocks."

"... the [personal] economies of Danes."

"... climate and welfare issues."

"... to get a new Prime Minister."

"... to help Danes with the rapidly rising prices on everything from energy to food."

"... get rid of the Prime Minister and get a right of centre government."

"... lower taxes and more freedom."

"... climate issues."

"... political courage to tackle various crises."

"... remove 'speed' and 'symbols' from politics and focus on climate and health-care challenges."

"... psychiatric and disabled politics that has room for everyone and respects the individual."

I went for the intense guy with the glasses who looks like he is trying to utilize mind control to win this election.

I wouldn't have voted for the hot chick if there had been some interesting alterntive.

#5 has the most perfect tie knot I've ever seen.  It's like a sculpture.

Yeah... I realized that I relied too much on official (and boring) images from Danish Parliament.

Do you want to change your vote?

No. I just... I don't know. Want to feel like the voter isn't yanked around by the man, you know?

Danes are a frightening looking people.

There, I said it.
I have come to believe that the whole world is an enigma, a harmless enigma that is made terrible by our own mad attempt to interpret it as though it had an underlying truth.

Alright, so the votes are officially counted except for the four Atlantic mandates (2 from the Faroe Islands and 2 from Greenland).

These are the results:

With 84.6% of eligible voters voting.

90 seats are required for a majority, and the Atlantic Mandates are expected to be 3 red and 1 blue, in which case Red Block can just barely squeeze in and form the government again. Alternately, with M (the Moderates) in play, a government "across the middle" is possible but there's no way the Social Democrats (led by the lady in blue at the bottom of the poll) will give up the PM spot given the options. They have said that's what they'll initially pursue... but it'll be interesting to see if they'll cut off the further left parties or not to pursue that project.

Many of the election stories come out of the fate of Venstre ("the Left", centre right "classic liberals" and the largest party of blue block) - led by the chap with the facial hair. No less than two splinter parties formed. One - the Moderates (from 0 to 16 seats) - led by a former PM who lost a leadership challenge (the guy who looks like a police inspector) aimed to be kingmakers by proposing a "government across the middle". If red block got one less mandate (and they were projected to), they'd have been in that position which would've been a massive comeback.

The other Venstre-borne new party is the Denmark Democrats (from 0 to 14 mandates)- led by an ex-minister of integration who quit the party after she was censured by parliament (including her own party) for breaking the law to separate married asylum seekers (she's the one in jeans, blue jacket, white shirt, and reddish hair). That party also did well, and almost completely ate the vote share of the original anti-immigrant populists, the Danish People's Party (led by the guy whose picture is no longer linked and got 0 languish votes). Part of the story there is intense leadership and personality conflicts, leading to senior members defecting to rival parties (they dropped from 16 to 5 - continuing their slide down from 37 in 2015). Though to be fair there are three or four other "we're not being hard enough on immigrants" parties in blue block and the Social Democrats have adopted most of their initial positioning, so competition is fierce.

The Liberal Alliance - Ayn Randish / Tech Bro right libertarian flavoured - led by the young nerdy dude in glasses whose picture also disappeared (but got some languish votes) also had a good election (from 4 to 14).

The big losers in blue block was Venstre - almost halved but still the biggest blue party (from 43 to 23 mandates) - and the Conservatives (led by the bald dude). At the beginning of the election period the Conservatives stood to almost double in size and bald dude declared his interest in becoming the Prime Minister for Blue Block in competition from the bearded bloke from Venstre (the centre right "classical liberal" party). But then bald dude started opening his mouth, failed to handle minor scandals, failed to take responsibility for things, and generally cut a poor figure and his party actually lost seats (from 12 to 10, but at one pointed looked like they'd more than double their seats).

In red block, the Social Democrats actually grew (48 to 50), in spite of lots of folk claiming to be tired of her for various reasons (including a controversial decision to put down the entire population of farmed mink as a possible covid vector).

The biggest loser in red block was Radikale Venstre ("the Radical Left", from 16 to 7). They're socially liberal, in favour of balanced budgets, but supportive of social welfare. They triggered the election over the mink, but also were perceived to want ministerial positions.

The lady most languishites voted for (on account of being photographed the prettiest, I reckon) is the leader of Enhedslisten (the Unity List) which is an amalgamation of various old school hard socialist splinter groups (from 13 to 9).

... this is probably more than anyone here wants to read about Danish politics, but if you want more ask away :)
