I admit that I avoided opening this thread for a full 24 hours because I've raised four children who loved this game just to see how quickly they could gross each other out.

I'm pleased to see that no insects or other wiggly things were included in the list.

I was thinking about where I would expect the word to pop up, and I think it's most common in pot lucks. 

"Do you need more entrees?"

"No, we're set, bring a dessert or side dish."

Cant't remember where to place the norman québécois hole though (maple syrup whiskey shooter instead of calvados).  Is it before or after the sorbet?

I can't remember the last time I saw "entree" on a menu.  Usually they break it into categories: soups, salads, appetizers, seafood, steaks, pasta, etc.

I'd rather have both than a main to be honest

I've stopped ordering starter and main together, so I can skip to dessert if the starter is substantial enough.

For me it's starter all the way. Would rather have a second starter (a finisher) than a dessert 9 times out of 10.

Starter.  It is reasonably easy to buy good dessert from elsewhere.  A good restaurant quality starter is more difficult to replicate.

Starters/appetizers. Only cuisine that would give me pause on that answer is Greek, because I'd be hard-pressed to choose between spanakopita and baklava- savory and sweet fillings go equally well with filo dough.
