Well 30 extra sort of like doubles the overall number of this confirmed happening doesn't it?

Blood clots were very popular on my mother's side of the family, so I can't say I am entirely unconcerned, but of course know the odds are very minimal. I'd just prefer them at zero.
Ish. Kai Kupferschmidt's been really good on this and there's clearly been something going on in Germany - but it was a bit of a mystery because the MHRA number of cases in the UK were far lower but they said they were reviewing. Similarly a Welsh university analysed the data in Wales and Aarhus University looked at the data in Denmark and neither of them could find cases.

Now they've found these cases it's still slightly lower than the number of cases discovered in Germany - but basically at the minute looks like it's about a 1 in 500k-1 million thing (depending on the clot talked about, but this may be why it's tough to see in smaller countries like Denmark and Wales). And there's theories of what the cause might be but no-one's agreed.

The MHRA statement doesn't give many details - but if it's similar to Germany it will be mainly younger women. So far there's been a statement by an expert panel of haematologists who've said that the UK data is across all ages and genders so maybe not.

But I think Zanza's right and the MHRA and EMA have got the right position of monitoring it but carrying because the risks of death from covid are far, far higher than the risk of this.

IIRC the German cases came from vaccinating nurses so working age women are bound to be over-represented

Yeah - I think you're right.

There's been theories that the difference between German and UK numbers (which is far more similar now) might be because Germany didn't allow AZ to be used in the elderly initially, while the UK did. But from what I understand AZ was used for all of the first four priority groups in the UK which includes care home and healthcare workers (and in some areas they're already vaccinating the under 50s).

Given all that I wonder if, as you say, it's just a sort of sample effect from Germany not using it on the elderly and focusing on key workers, while in the UK because it's been used on all age groups and genders from the start. It might be that younger women are higher risk but, as you say, maybe not.

Basically, twice this year, I will have a 1-in-500k chance for a stroke. :P

I've gone big on Deliveroo during lockdown and feel like I have a 1-in-500k chance of a stroke most weeks

In Holland out of 400 000 vaccinated with AZ, 5 had severe clotting incidents, 1 had a stroke another one died. So they have stopped jabbing under 60s with it as well.

Given that most Euro countries are for the most part still vaccinating over 70s, those "no AZ for under 60s" bans are a bit cute  :P

at the rate they're vaccinating everyone will be 60 by the time they get their first jab.

In France, vaccination is supposed to be open to all adults from mid-June.  :P

Precisely.

Zanza

Our federal president, the state premier of Baden-Württemberg, Merkel's chief spokesman, and the head of our public health institute publicly posted how they got vaccinated with AZ.

The interior minister, who I considered a fucking asshole even before, publicly said that he does not want AZ.

Is there some kind of damnatio memoriæ for Seehofer?

If Söder becomes next chancellor that's a distinct possibility.
