You know what is really alarming about this?

Religion. What moves the needle the most for me is religion.

This suggests, at first pass, that the Republicans are not the party of bigots or anti-immigrants, or low taxes, but really just the party of religion.

I don't think that is because they have any policies (other than abortion) that are actually religiously motivated. But just that they appeal to the things that religion appeals to, and not the thoughtful, spiritual, things....

It is interesting that positions are in fact that predictable based strictly on non-political (on their face) factors.
Not that interesting.  There are a couple of core ideological issues that underlie the parties these days, which are logically connected to identity, and then a bunch of add-on political issues that just happened to gravitate to one party or another.  These add-on issues are either tangentially related to the core issue by disparately impacting one side more than the other, ended up in the party due to a political calculation by the party leaders, or just wound up there by accident of history.  The one outcome of partisanship is that the add-on issues have become fused to the core ideological issues.

I don't find that surprising either.  In pretty much the whole world, religion is allied with authoritarianism, traditionalism, and hostility to critical thinking, and that goes hand-in-hand with bigotry.  Low taxes are a pure add-on item, a result of alliance between plutocrats and bigots, as well as the association of big government with handouts to non-whites.

You having only one grandmother explains a lot. :)
