It's amazing the different reality these people seem to live in.
From all I've heard Portland is one of the better cities in the US.

It is. But from the propaganda of MAGAland, Portland is basically a warzone. And so are most American cities.

It is truly insane how deploying American troops against Americans is now considered normal in the Trump regime.

All I know about Portland I learned form Portlandia, so I can't really judge.  :P

It's just appealing to revanchism from the MAGA base, send the army against those rebellious and lawless blue cities.

I've seen claims that homelessness is very high and big name businesses are leaving downtown.

My view is obviously skewed by media, both News and Popular, since I've never been; however, my view up until 15 years ago was that it was americas most boring big city*. Then around that time the narrative changed to it being hobo central and dangerous.

*by Oregon standards... and I guess Canadian too :P

So not war ravaged or under siege in any common use of those terms.

That's pretty ironic considering right wing policies are usually all for these things.

What right wing policies encourage more homeless people to come to their city?  What right wing policies cause businesses to leave city centers?

Shit economics that filter all the wealth up to the 1% and a belief in offering zero help to those who have fallen on hard times, they're clearly just lazy.

Car centric urbanism. Trump at the moment is pushing active hostility to bike lanes and public transport.

Point for the first comment, (though you wording was a bit passive aggressive :P ) but cars aren't why downtown businesses are failing. It's mainly a combination of increased harassment by the mentally unwell and working from home. That diminishes downtown foot traffic. And throw in the perennial favourite of online shopping and things get grim.

How do these policies cause problems specifically in Portland?  The claim is homelessness is worse in Portland (and Seattle, San Francisco and LA) than in say Houston or Orlando.

You guys are almost ready for the Midterms.

Jacob

If the American public is used to troops being deployed for pointless reasons, they'll be less outraged when troops are deployed to carry out a coup later.

Perhaps more importantly, if the American armed forces are used to being deployed against the public for pointless reasons they'll be less resistant to being deployed to enact martial law or otherwise use force to keep Republican hold on power.

I have no idea how Portland compares to anywhere else - I gather it's a bit better than many but not really relevant.

Your claim was these were the things that upset MAGA so much. When clearly they don't as they pursue the policies you would take if you wanted to make these things worse.

Online shopping doesn't help or course.
WFH... I'm not sure there. It's harmed business areas in general but centres especially? It's out of town offices that have been hit worse here at least. There was already a shift back to centres underway and with wfh as a thing the reason for existence of business parks has took a blow.
You certainly do see however that places with a more people centred design do tend to be doing better than those where the centre might as well just be another business park.

I haven't mentioned MAGA.  Portland is a Democratic town.  Democrats decide the road policies in Portland and they decide the homeless policies in Portland.
