Quote from: DGuller on September 05, 2025, 08:20:55 AMIronically, even though Trump didn't mean it, this was the one time he made something less Orwellian.  Department of War is a more accurate description of US military than Department of Defense.
I don't entirely disagree - and it would be nice if there was similar accuracy/honesty that the Department of Defense has been very active over the last 25 years and yet I don't know the last time the US was actually at war. If we're acknowledging "kinetic military force" (or whatever the euphemism is now) is actually war, maybe Congress could re-assert control over their most important job too.

I mean...not this Congress, obviously :bleeding:
:hmm:  Maybe Department of Special Military Operations?

Yesterday ICE raided a Hyundai plant in Georgia and detained a some 400 people.

Some hundreds of Koreans initial reports suggest. Just makes one so want to invest there.

Someone hadn't paid their protection money.

Great. Our great western ally is run by Tony Soprano.

Invest in manufacturing in the US, we'll only arrest some of your workers.

Although, if they really were illegals, that's mighty dumb on Hyundai and their subcontractors part.

The distinction between legal and illegal immigrant seems increasingly irrelevant. ICE just arrests them all.

After all one of the big outrages Trump used to get arrested was his blood libel against legal Haitian immigrants.

In several surveys, the overwhelming first choice for what makes Canada unique is multiculturalism. This, in a world collapsing into stupid, impoverishing hatreds, is the distinctly Canadian national project.

And then God will report the results to his boss, President Trump.
We have, accordingly, always had plenty of excellent lawyers, though we often had to do without even tolerable administrators, and seen destined to endure the inconvenience of hereafter doing without any constructive statesmen at all.

But everyone loves Koreans. Ok, maybe not some areas of LA :P yeah, I guess I still fall into the delusion of thinking that sometimes the US government still works like it did in the before times and that an operation of this size would have some evidence. But, well, we don't live in that world anymore, do we?

Yeah, I've read that Hyundai claims none of his direct employees were arrested. But c'mon, you gotta do a bit of due diligence on your subcontractors, particulary in your own damn site.

But there's a nonzero chance ICE just arrested whoever they caught not carrying their papers at the time.

Yeah I think I read a story about ICE detaining a Maine policeman originally from Jamaica who had the right to work in the country and whose status had been checked on a DHS database by the police force that employed him - and then ICE basically said that was "reckless reliance".

I'm not sure ICE are really restraining themselves to only detaining or deporting people they should be - or indeed following the law at all.

Speaker Johnson is now saying that Trump was an FBI informant against Epstein.
"Everything that brought you here -- all the things that made you a prisoner of past sins -- they are gone. Forever and for good. So let the past go... and live."

"Somebody, after all, had to make a start. What we wrote and said is also believed by many others. They just don't dare express themselves as we did."

In every plant I've ever worked at the subcontractor has to submit a lot of paperwork for their workers to be allowed entrance. Usually through a web portal.
In Spain, for example, you have to submit your Social Security status, a statement by your health insurer that you are healthy enough to work, risk assessments of the activities you will do, safety training certifications, plus stuff like forklift qualifications, and so on.

This might not be a thing in the US, though. But any major employer certainly knows how to do this and already has the required resources.
