What does a TRUMP presidency look like?

Not to bring that point here - but actually Josq's poll shows that supporters of every party except Reform back her sentence. So that's Tories, Labour and Lib Dems - Labour proscribed Palestine Action, the Tories backed them and the Lib Dems split.

They are different issues. Palestine Action was designated a terrorist organisation which goes a little beyond speech (but means speech in support of them is speech in support of terrorism). Connolly was charged with incitement - not anything under counter-terrorism legislation which is what the Palestine Action people will be getting charged under. And I have no issue with charging if they incite, or for the criminal damage they've - but they're not a terrorist organisation and they're not what our counter-terrorism legislation is for.

The better comparison is the Labour councillor, Ricky Jones, who was just acquitted during those riots last year speaking to a counter-protest. Lucy Connolly tweeted during the riots "set fire to all the hotels [housing asylum seekers] for all I care [...] if that makes me racist, so be it". Jones condemned the "disgusting Nazi fascists [...] and we need to cut their throats [...] we need to get rid of them all". The striking difference is that Connolly pleaded guilty while Jones didn't and took it to a jury trial - and there's bee a number of "speech" trials in the UK recently. The lesson I'd take is: if you're charged go to a full trial because juries are reluctant to convict for speech offences (see BLM, Just Stop Oil, Jones etc) while judges are absolutely willing to throw the book.

Having said that I think there is a point on universities. I think the language of safety is part of what's being used in Trump's assault on universities, particularly through civil rights legislation - I think disingenuously. I'd add that I also think no platforming is one of the most singularly ineffective political strategies I've ever seen. In both cases I think it's key to always consider the implausible possibility that you might not hold power forever - so whatever you're doing your opponents might also do. And I think the left absolutely need to be building and defending their care for free speech.

On the Marxists - God bless them but the PMC are not Marxist. We'd be in a far better place if they had one tenth that rigour :P

It seems like different laws, the incitement and the proscription but the issue of free speech.  I did see that groups proscribed include Neo-Nazi groups that did nothing but post on Twitter.  To American eyes this is restrictive.  Vance is being a hypocrite, but so are those who were fine with canceling and other bullshit.  The default now is it's only censorship when your side is getting skewered, it's safety or politeness when your side is doing it.

The PMC as a whole is not Marxist, but it is from this group that the Marxists tend to get drawn from and is who it appeals too.  After all, it's people like them who are primarily in charge.  They tend to grow up or sell out and decide they will "fight within the system", and pretend they are holding true to their ideas, even if they don't act on them in any meaningful way.

I've given it serious thought. I must scorn the ways of my family, and seek a Japanese woman to yield me my progeny. He shall live in the lands of the east, and be well tutored in his sacred trust to weave the best traditions of Japan and the Sacred South together, until such time as he (or, indeed his house, which will periodically require infusion of both Southern and Japanese bloodlines of note) can deliver to the South it's independence, either in this world or in space.  -Lettow April of 2011

Christ, the US has been banning books from libraries since before even Reagan.

What you Americans should be railing against is the growing influence of Opus Dei and Christian Nationalists like Pete Hegseth.

The Seven Mountains and this idea of a king are not just talk, it is a plan, from Rushdoony to the Moral Majority, to the mega-churches.

Quote"Central to just about every one of Rushdoony's writings is the notion that freedom must be preserved at the local level, so that God's law can be faithfully obeyed by all people, without interference from higher temporal powers."

Good luck with that.

I thought libraries are generally underfunded :p

Hey, my local library usually had books that were musty and smelly. Still read them.

I just saw that on X wild rumours of Trump being dead are spreading as he hasn't been seen in public.

The US Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit ruled that the tariffs are illegal. Let's all sit together and watch as nothing happens.

QuoteJosq posted something where in Britain a women was tossed in jail for 10 months for a tweet.

That wasn't one Tweet but several, all inciting violence, to be precise, to burn down buildings with brown people in them. If she was out on the street yelling to a crowd of tens of thousands to do so, nobody would debate the sentence. I don't like the Internet censoring the British state is attempting but rallying people to kill others should be a crime even if done in text.

I'll be in DC today for some event on the National Mall. Guess I should be prepared for spontaneous celebration.

Nothing will happen because the Court stayed its own decision to allow time for an appeal.

In several surveys, the overwhelming first choice for what makes Canada unique is multiculturalism. This, in a world collapsing into stupid, impoverishing hatreds, is the distinctly Canadian national project.

In the US you have to be pretty specific to get charged with incitement.  When Michael Brown's father implored a crowd to "burn the motherfucker down", he did not get charged.

Also none of the Trammps were arrested when they urged listeners to burn that mother down.  The result was a plague of disco infernos during the 1970s
