QuoteTrump administration planning to pause most federal government websites - report
CBS News is reporting that most federal government websites are expected to go dark at 5 pm ET

What is the point of this? We haven't even reached the two weeks mark FFS and there is 4 more years of this.

But hey, the Democrats were punished for not condemning Israel, so there is that.

Quote from: Barrister on January 31, 2025, 12:12:05 PMthey were founded largely on principles of religious freedom (that's the whole story of the Mayflower and the pilgrims)

The pilgrims had plenty of religious freedom in Leiden. They needed to go somewhere else so their kids would not have the freedom to leave their church.

They were also worried that their kids were starting to integrate and become Dutch IIRC. The only way to stay English while also having religious freedom (maybe religious freedom to be culty) was to be a colonist. The Mayflower I think more rightly deserves to be remembered for its primitive written constitution, the Mayflower Compact, than the religious freedom thing. And, indeed, when I was in school we had to do a project where each page was a line from the Mayflower Compact and you had to illustrate it or say what it means to you or whatever.

However, there is the fact that with Charles I and William Laud trying to force conformity on the English and, disastrously, the Scottish Church lots of Calvinists DID flee to New England. Oliver Cromwell himself seriously considered it for awhile IIRC. So it isn't like the constant religious nonsense in England at the time, and people trying to flee it to protect their religious beliefs, wasn't a thing. Of course by the 18th century I think people were generally able to worship as they pleased in England, at least to the extent one could in the colonies anyway, and that stopped being a motivator.

What you describe in the start of your first paragraph is a small group of people who seem xenophobic / eager to stay in charge of their religious cult. :D

Also, while I get the Mayflower Compact stands out historically, was it really influential at all in the founding of America? I found this one BBC article that suggests not

There's a lot worthwhile in that article, but I suggest it is also very much a product of it's times - September 2020, during the George Floyd / BLM protests.

You can say the Mayflower and the Pilgrims were not as important as history and myth make them out to be, while not completely dismissing their importance.

Quote from: Razgovory on January 31, 2025, 04:25:42 PMYeah, we are all founded on genocide and the like.  Every living person is descended from someone who participated in the destruction of another people.  Your country is founded on the theft of land and the exploitation through unequal treaties of indigenous people who in turn exterminated and enslaved other indigenous people.

Obviously, no more mentions about LGBT issues, since that's not a thing.
Gays and trans do not exists in this new pure America.

That will make Raz happy, religious freedom has finally triumphed over the evil of radical secularism. :)

And also this:

QuoteOn Friday, however, many pages that did not seem related to "gender" or "diversity" had also been taken down, such as AtlasPlus, an interactive tool from CDC with surveillance data on HIV, viral hepatitis, STDs and TB. Also gone missing: a page with basic information about HIV testing. The CDC's Social Vulnerability Index, a tool that assesses community resilience in the event of natural disaster was also taken down.

History and myth still play a role, yes.

You really need to stop.
I've given it serious thought. I must scorn the ways of my family, and seek a Japanese woman to yield me my progeny. He shall live in the lands of the east, and be well tutored in his sacred trust to weave the best traditions of Japan and the Sacred South together, until such time as he (or, indeed his house, which will periodically require infusion of both Southern and Japanese bloodlines of note) can deliver to the South it's independence, either in this world or in space.  -Lettow April of 2011

Maybe now you will understand what happens when you let religious radicals free to spread their dogma.

You lose your healthcare, a lot of people get hurt, not just in the US.

Exactly this.

And I'm certainly not waiting for this to happen in my state.  I hope the government doubles down on the crack down of lunatics before it becomes a fascist theocracy like the US.

Quote"Bill criminalizing votes for immigrant sanctuary policies 'constitutionally suspect'

As Gov. Bill Lee's immigration enforcement plan moves swiftly through the Tennessee Legislature, one component of the bill — aimed at arresting local officials who support sanctuary policies for immigrants — drew scrutiny Tuesday.

Included in the governor's wide-ranging proposal to coordinate with the Trump Administration on mass immigrant detentions and deportations is a provision that creates a Class E felony for public officials who vote to adopt or enact sanctuary policies. Sanctuary policies can shield undocumented immigrants and limit cooperation with enforcement action

The felony charge, punishable by up to six years in prison and a $3,000 fine, would apply to any public official who votes in favor of a sanctuary law, policy or on non-binding resolutions."
