I've been watching Marx Brothers movies to avoid some but not all of the news.  On Horsefeathers right now.  Staying away from Duck Soup for now, it cuts a bit too close to home.

Bob's Burgers for me. Always weird, but also wholesome. :P
I am, somehow, less interested in the weight and convolutions of Einstein's brain than in the near certainty that people of equal talent have lived and died in cotton fields and sweatshops.

BRICS is bullshit anyway. Should just be IC.
The countries attending BRICS now is more than BRICS. It's also a larger share of global GDP than the G7.

Not in nominal terms. And G7 is typically attended by more countries as well and the EU is a permanent guest.

And the only shared topic of BRICS is that all of them dislike "the West".

While that might be true, they also don't really have any kind of ability to make unified decisions or declarations, nor are they a coherent bloc.

To be fair, using PPP numbers IC alone almost equal the G7 (and there were 37 attendees at the last BRICS summit, not counting the UN but counting Palestine).

Fair - although that's the reason why responding to the global financial crisis required the invention of the G20

Not sure that's a fair description of the UAE or Egypt - far less applicant states like Nigeria or Turkey. Or, if it is, we might as well give in.

But another way of framing it is that they are revisionist - but the G7 represented, I think 50% of global GDP and two thirds of world industrial production in 1990. It's now about a third on both - I think there's a case for revision.

Edit: This is, incidentally, why I think the West needs its own theory of development/growth and how those developing economies can be incorporated into the West's structures/world order. Because I think there are alternatives on development and growth, and the rest of the world will just look to, where necessary build their own structures.

I just meant the idea that those five countries represent some kind of emerging anything is stupid. China and India might. And even then China has already emerged. Saying the #1 or #2 biggest economy in the world is some kind of future thing is rather absurd.

If BRICS doesn't mean Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa then its not BRICS but something else.

They've been accepting members. Egypt, Indonesia, UAE, maybe Iran are in. I think Turkey, Nigeria and others are in stages of applying.

I think it is legit becoming more than just a slogan by Goldman Sachs.

Edit: And they still call it BRICS - HQ in China I think.

Quote from: viper37 on January 21, 2025, 01:35:00 PMLook at your pal Otto's reasoning for voting Trump.

Everyone has different reasons for voting Trump.  Some on the left voted for Trump or stayed home to punish the Dems for not being leftist enough.  If some of them are recent immigrants to the US and have the sligthest irregularity in their documentation, I hope they rot in a detentation camp awaiting deportation.

For the others, I hope they lose all health insurence coverage.

Hey, you got what you wanted.  The war in Gaza is over.  Genocide Joe and Copmala are defeated.  Perhaps Canada can take in some of the people deported by Trump.
I've given it serious thought. I must scorn the ways of my family, and seek a Japanese woman to yield me my progeny. He shall live in the lands of the east, and be well tutored in his sacred trust to weave the best traditions of Japan and the Sacred South together, until such time as he (or, indeed his house, which will periodically require infusion of both Southern and Japanese bloodlines of note) can deliver to the South it's independence, either in this world or in space.  -Lettow April of 2011

Egypt? Iran? As emerging economies? LOL.

They probably should have higher standards for their club. But I guess if the initial concept includes South Africa and Russia that ship already sailed.

Anyway of course it is bigger than the G7, the G7 does not include India and China. But so what? That still means it really is just IC.

If your bloc has both Iran and the UAE in it, then it's not an effective bloc.

Stop and consider the actual interests of these countries, as they themselves perceive them.  Certainly there is a desire for revision and an end to accountability from all ten countries involved in BRICS.  But these aren't countries who have some pretty serious disagreements about some pretty fundamental points.  And they don't have the time to coalesce and hammer their differences out, because Russia and especially China have such disastrous demographics that are going to put them into uncharted economic waters in the next fifteen years.

They've created a talk shop for disaffected countries.  It's an international version of reddit.

Raz, there is only a ceasefire.  It remains to be seen what happens after.
