So apparently there are masked federal agents arresting peaceful protesters in Portland? Lol can I be: Soviet/Putinist Russia?

The Feds sometimes forget the shit they are allowed to do in other countries is frowned upon when done domestically...

Or is it frowned upon? I guess I don't see the nation rising up to preserve liberty.
The big shift against Trump in the polls came immediately after he cleared Lafayette square
It is far better for the truth to tear my flesh to pieces, then for my soul to wander through darkness in eternal damnation.

Jet: So what kind of woman is she? What's Julia like?
Faye: Ordinary. The kind of beautiful, dangerous ordinary that you just can't leave alone.
Jet: I see.
Faye: Like an angel from the underworld. Or a devil from Paradise.

Another bill that Trump has threatened to veto is the National Defense Authorization Act, because it includes a provision for renaming military bases currently named for Confederate generals, even -- as Wallace pointed out -- if the military supports it.

"I don't care what the military says. I do – I'm supposed to make the decision," Trump said. "Fort Bragg is a big deal. We won two World Wars, nobody even knows General Bragg. We won two World Wars. Go to that community where Fort Bragg is, in a great state, I love that state, go to the community, say how do you like the idea of renaming Fort Bragg, and then what are we going to name it? We're going to name it after the Reverend Al Sharpton?"

What does a law have to do with renaming military bases? Isn't renaming a base just a simple administrative decision?

"We won two world wars. Beautiful world wars. That were vicious and horrible. And we won them out of Fort Bragg, we won them out of all of these forts, and now they want to throw those names away" -- Trump

Would Trump still be in this bad a shape vs Biden if the corona pandemic didn't happen? I mean, him actively betraying his country didn't sway anyone in the electorate.

Trump would be in much better shape vs Biden if not for the corona pandemic, but not clear exactly how close that would be.

I guess one thing we can see from the polls if they are true is that people are quite very much tolerate a nasty incompetent leader being nasty and incompetent to others, but when they are directly affected by it, they grow irate.

I'm not sure it's easy to disentangle attitudes to his response to BLM from his corona response. I've read that in focus groups the thing that people of all types react really strongly against his statements on BLM.

I get the impression the big losses came because he appears to be so lost and clueless.

The Americans who would not tolerate his constant lying and bullshit were already against him. The Americans who would not tolerate his regressive positions on - well, everything - were already against him.

What made those who would otherwise approve of his bullshit, his regressiveness, etc. turn against him now, is the fact that he doesn't appear to have the slightest grip on the issues, either the racial/police protests, or the pandemic.

People commonly blast Trump for being an authoritarian, and he is, but that would not get people who would support him to turn against him. Not at all. Many people are attracted to authoritarianism. Nor, evidently, are people who otherwise support him put off by his pathological lying.

The big shift is that even these people can see he's got no clue what to do. They are turning against him because, while he has all the instincts of an authoritarian, he's no strongman. An authoritarian has to act with authority. He's barely acting at all.

Sure, he's sending his goons into Portland, and obstructing Congress in its COVID efforts. But these are some pretty feeble acts of political theatre.

But serving Trump means serving a higher strongman, a man who really knows how to be authoritarian. Trump is merely a vessel, and it's unfair to blame him for that. :(

They're also now showing up in Malibu, CA, from what I've heard.

Right now, the right-wing idiots are okay with it because Portland is a liberal city. When it happens in their cities, suddenly, it will be too much. But by that time, it'll be old hat.

The City Council, Mayor, and Governor are no pleased, and I believe have filed a lawsuit to get them out. So far, nothing has managed to budge them from Portland.

Can't they order state law enforcement to arrest them?

For the last several years I have noticed many conservatives talking about a coming civil war.  Some said that the US is already in a civil war but the shooting just hasn't started.  I even had a very fat old woman tell me that people like me are the reason why we shall have this civil war.  I'm beginning to wonder if they have a point.  The coronavirus, armed protesters taking up positions at state capitals, politicized police just grabbing people off the street... This nation is becoming ungovernable.  There is a growing number of people who believe there is global conspiracy of Satanic child molesters secretly ruling the world.  There are a lot of people who refuse to live in the same reality the rest of us do.  That's bad, but in a pandemic it is deadly dangerous.  It's like riding an airplane where the pilot and copilot no longer agree on definition of "Sky", "Ocean" and "Mountain".
I've given it serious thought. I must scorn the ways of my family, and seek a Japanese woman to yield me my progeny. He shall live in the lands of the east, and be well tutored in his sacred trust to weave the best traditions of Japan and the Sacred South together, until such time as he (or, indeed his house, which will periodically require infusion of both Southern and Japanese bloodlines of note) can deliver to the South it's independence, either in this world or in space.  -Lettow April of 2011

I've long believed that you're not as crazy as you try to make it sound. Posts like this is why I think you're probably one of the saner folks here.
