Oh, you mean the DACA'd up kid who had been submitting her paperwork every two years like clockwork?  The one who was only "illegal" because the gubmint was dragging their heels on approving her reapplication?

Um, no.  The Chris Hayes impersonator let her status lapse.

QuoteDACA status lapsed
Vargas said she arrived in the United States with her family at age 7 as an undocumented immigrant from Argentina and later was granted DACA status, which lasts two years.
Her attorney, Abby Peterson, said Vargas' DACA status expired in November. She could not immediately afford the minimum $495 renewal application fee, Peterson said, and put off the process until last month. The government recommends DACA recipients apply for a renewal between 150 and 120 days before their status expires.

what a dumb decision on her part. people can *always* scrounge up $500 through austerity measures.

Your righteous indignation might resonate with me a little more strongly if a $500 bill wouldn't fuck me all up, too. :secret:

it's true. she knew it was going to expire, and she could have saved. hell, she could have couch surfed and worked three jobs starting in november and saved that much. eat rice and beans, etc. this wasn't saving for retirement, this was saving for her staying in the country she apparently wanted to continue residing in.

she didn't do that, and if she stops blaming other people, she may very well regret her fuckup for the rest of her life.

She could have done a gofundme to raise the cash. I'm sure all the big-hearted leftists would have gotten her the $500 in no time.

we've always known trump is loose with words. it's dishonest to pick out particularly statements and focus on the literal meaning of the words to argue trump meant to convey what the literal meaning suggests

I keep hearing this but have no real idea what it means.  What meaning is supposed to be attributed to his words if not what the words mean?  Is Trump speaking some secret private language that requires extensive translation?  It is Orwellian to say that it is dishonest to hold people accountable for what they say.  Communication is a basic function of a President.  Foreign leaders and peoples listen carefully to what Presidents say - that is why every other President before this one took care in making public statements.  If Trump is incapable of using words to convey meaning in the traditional way - by saying words that have the meaning of what he intends to say - then he suffers from a basic communicative disability that disqualifies him from serving in the position.

In point of fact - this particular trope of speech happens to be a common pattern with Trump.  It has come up often quite recently with the constructions: "No one is less racist than me" (really?  Less racist than say Desmond Tutu?  What about poor Melania - she is stuck being the second last racist?  What is wrong with her?)   "No one is less anti-Semitic" "I alone can . . ."  It's very weird.  It only makes sense in the context of someone who doesn't see others as real people, but as objects or tools.  When you're the only person qua person in the world then by definition you are the best, the only, the least vicious, etc.

When you see such repeated figures of speech, and behavior that matches those figures, the problem does not lie in the listener. It lies in the speaker.

Not sure I'm the one displaying righteous indignation.  Anyway, you could just admit you were wrong and we could move on.

disagree that your explanation is the only one that makes sense

re: "such repeated figures of speech," someone can consistently be loose with their words while yammering about something in the heat of the moment. it doesn't have to equal some mental disorder.

LaCroix

I think listening to trump's private conversations, when he's not having to talk to millions or even billions of people, would be a better way to determine things like whether he has a mental disorder

"it was more complex than I thought" or something along those lines

Right.  The most flattering interpretation is "we had this silly simplistic bumper sticker campaign promise, and now that we've actually looked at the issue we realize there's no way in hell that works."  The most flattering interpretation is he realizes he was wrong, but he can't admit it.
