Quote from: Tamas on Today at 08:24:26 AMBTW I feel like nukes are proving to be similar to dreadnoughts but I don't mean this as a positive.

So far Russia has threatened their use almost weekly but not even the Kursk incursion made them actually do so.

On the other hand... Let's say this Baltics nuke union is confirmed and announced and Russia decides to preemptively carpet-bike the Norwich countries. Can we honestly say that the US would trigger the destruction of human civilisation by doing a counter strike? Or that Europe would trigger the collapse of European civilisation by retaliating? Even without the orange dementor in the White House I doubt people would have the stomach for it.

What I am getting at is that MAD I think is actually much harder to trigger in practice than it was assumed on paper. But that can also mean that nukes might become a standard weapon of war. Especially if Russia and the US form a fascist alliance.

All of this is true, but such a nuclear union would increase uncertainty in the Kremlin of the wisdom of attacking, which is a good thing.

The Nordics could probably survive a carpet biking.

Sounds like an unusual Scandinavian sexual position involve two people acting in tandem.

Being lazy is bad; unless you still get what you want, then it's called "patience".
Hubris must be punished. Severely.

Quote from: The Brain on Today at 06:54:14 AMPossibly. It's not always the case that 20+ individual organizations deliver less efficiently than a single lumbering behemoth.

Not unless we federalise. Otherwise every country will want strategic autonomy. Sure, the Nordics might gather together and specialise our production, but that's only half a France, Germany or GB in size.

20+ different kind DoD ordering 20+ different equipment types from 20+ different factories is not going to be more efficient than one DoD ordering one type of equipment from one supplier.

Yeah, we should standardise on a few models of each weapon type, my 1st suggestion, Bf109G, just to scare the Russians.

To not have a Le Pen, Trump, Farage or Putin tell us that we cannot use or buy this or that piece of equipment. To have our own fates in our own hands.

EU needs strategic autonomy, but for that to happen we must weave ourselves tighter together.

Second best is Swedish strategic autonomy.

You don't need the exact same gear though right? Somethings can be standardized like ammunition.

Quote from: Valmy on Today at 11:58:30 AMStrategic autonomy to do what?

Two main things, I think:

1: Not having to depend on the mood of the US government of the day to effectively resist attacks by Russia or other enemies.

2: Be able to efffectively support friends and strategic interests in the near abroad (i.e. Ukraine) independently of the US.

It might evolve into something else in the future, but those are the immediate objectives I think.

What we need is reliable insurance that we can obtain and use our military equipment as we se fit.

Gripen engine and to a far larger extent UK tridents are for example at the complete mercy of the Americans. UK at least have to grovel for decades probably until a new UK missile can be deployed. They don't have strategic autonomy.

Sikorski, the Polish foreign minister stood up to Musk's lies on Starlink (pointing out the Poles are paying for it, it's not a Musk gift), so Musk told him "be quiet, small man" while Rubio wanted him to say thanks for Starlink.

Rubio said Poland should be grateful for Starlink because without it, "Ukraine would have lost this war long ago and Russians would be on the border with Poland right now."

I am, somehow, less interested in the weight and convolutions of Einstein's brain than in the near certainty that people of equal talent have lived and died in cotton fields and sweatshops.
