The White House said Tuesday that its officials "will determine" which news outlets can regularly cover President Donald Trump up close — a sharp break from a century of tradition in which a pool of independently chosen news organizations go where the chief executive does and hold him accountable on behalf of regular Americans.

The move, coupled with the government's arguments this week in a federal lawsuit over access filed by The Associated Press, represented an unprecedented seizing of control over coverage of the American presidency by any administration. Free speech advocates expressed alarm.

White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said the changes would rotate traditional outlets from the group and include some streaming services. Leavitt cast the change as a modernization of the press pool, saying the move would be more inclusive and restore "access back to the American people" who elected Trump. But media experts said the move raised troubling First Amendment issues because the president is choosing who covers him.

So I guess the good news is Congress is still doing things and passed a bill.

The bad news it slashes Medicaid (think almost entirely) and food stamps. Things that, let me remind you, you still need even if you work for Walmart because their starvation wages still put you on government assistance.

Huge tax cut for the richest people. Probably will increase my taxes like the 2017 bill did but I will let you know next year.

Tons of more money for defense.

Massively increases the deficit and the debt. Just like I predicted even if Elon Musk's DOGE was actually a huge success it would do no good because all savings will be wiped out in a giant tax cut.

It's bizarre. This is the THIRD time the Republicans are going to massively increase the debt and deficit for no damn good reason. This is 2001 and 2017 all over again. Our country is on the path to ruin entirely because of them. All we would need to do is restore pre-2001 tax levels and we would be fine.

The Democrats just won't undo these tax cuts. They didn't in 2009 and they didn't in 2021. Granted we were in a massive economic disaster both times so doing so would have been disastrous but they never even talked about doing it. And then they massively increase spending and on the suicide pact goes.

Well no. The Democrats DID pass a much needed tax increase in 1993. One that eventually put us on sounder financial footing.

And they got destroyed in the elections in 1994 so there is that. But they also got destroyed in 2010 (and that loss was FAR worse than 1994 because it also happened on a state level and happened right in time for the 2010 census, enabling the Republicans to rig elections all through the country) and they didn't raise any taxes.

But your point is taken. The Democrats serve the same masters so while they will try to throw us some scraps, they aren't going to be too unfriendly to their corporate benefactors. So they are still preferred because they send us scraps, but still bad. I guess if we are going to destroy the country we might as well help the poor a bit in the process.

I guess I should note this bill just passed the House. The Senate will have to pass something similar and the President will have to sign it so nothing is live yet.

But the Republicans have a smaller margin in the House than the Senate...
