Should I try to understand Islam?

So, I gotta say that what started as a thought experiment - trying to understand and embrace conservatism, especially the alt right - has proven quite enlightening (even though a number of my friends, including many people on this forum, were ready to burn me in effigy at the height of it). I set out to learn more about the ideology I used to consider the veritable Antichrist - embraced it for a while - and now I feel that I can view it much less emotionally, and see its strengths and weaknesses, just as I do with liberalism/leftism.

The next logical step would be to do the same about Islam(ism) - the ideology I consider abhorrent. Should I go Muslim (or at least Islamophile) for a while? :P

I understand Christianity - or at least Catholicism.
