Why don't we have the cultural appropriation discussion here, and leave the other thread for stupid things our friends and families post on Facebook.
I've given it serious thought. I must scorn the ways of my family, and seek a Japanese woman to yield me my progeny. He shall live in the lands of the east, and be well tutored in his sacred trust to weave the best traditions of Japan and the Sacred South together, until such time as he (or, indeed his house, which will periodically require infusion of both Southern and Japanese bloodlines of note) can deliver to the South it's independence, either in this world or in space.  -Lettow April of 2011

Also, idea of different cultures is a useful abstraction, but it obscures a much more complicated reality. On the finest level, every individual can be said to represent their own culture, and while we can identify commonalities between individuals and group them into broad categories, it's important to keep in mind that those categories are artificial, are shaped by power relations, and always overlap with others and contain myriad differences. Too much of this discourse treats cultures like fantasy races.
