The scientists who made the detection are respected researchers, and the signal is strong enough that it's probably not just random noise, Shostak told Space.com. Furthermore, the signal is consistent with something an alien civilization might send out — and if aliens did indeed do it, they are certainly far more advanced than we are, he added.

I am beginning to think it may not be such a great idea to look for aliens.  If we are the native Americans of this universe, it doesn't make sense to tell the much more advanced Europeans that we are out here...

I think native American gives us to much credit.  An alien would be a not only be a different species, but have no relationship with any life form on earth.  Human and pumpkin would have more in common.  Instead of Native American vs European think the US against chimpanzees.
I've given it serious thought. I must scorn the ways of my family, and seek a Japanese woman to yield me my progeny. He shall live in the lands of the east, and be well tutored in his sacred trust to weave the best traditions of Japan and the Sacred South together, until such time as he (or, indeed his house, which will periodically require infusion of both Southern and Japanese bloodlines of note) can deliver to the South it's independence, either in this world or in space.  -Lettow April of 2011

when I heard the news, I knew you would post it here :D

I'm not getting excited just yet.  There's likely an higher probability that the Nordiques will be back in Quebec city and win the Stanley Cup before we establish first contact with an alien species.

G'Kar made a better analogy on this.

So you're saying there is a chance!

Well since that's almost certain to happen... :shifty:

Quote...researchers using a radio telescope in Russia detected a candidate SETI...

The astronomers have not yet published a study about the detection...

they plan to discuss it next month at the 67th International Astronautical Congress (IAC) in Guadalajara, Mexico...

HD 164595 is known to harbor one planet — a roughly Neptune-mass world that orbits too close to the star to support life as we know it...

Based on the received signal's characteristics, aliens would have to generate about 100 billion billion watts of energy to blast it out in all directions. And they'd still have to produce more than 1 trillion watts if they beamed it only to Earth for some reason...

He certainly hopes the ATA finds something that would suggest ET is behind the signal, but he said he suspects there's a more prosaic explanation...

The Russia-based team...

only detected the signal once...

"Without a confirmation of this signal...'"

All of this in the article Tim posted, and yet he is still excited. :(

More likely than the Cubs winning the Stanley Cup. Or the World Series for that matter.

Well, I'm happy it's not aliens.  Any day that it's not aliens is a good day.
