This incident also produced one of the most iconic pictures of Franco's dictatorship, when Manuel Fraga (then minister for tourism, later drafter of the 1979 constitution and founder of Alianza Popular, which later morphed into the present day PP) had to go to the site and bathe in the sea together with the American ambassador to send the message that the area was perfectly safe and there was no nuclear contamination.
