But what makes Jerusalem newsworthy IMO is not merely the existence of violence, but a change in the status quo.

It's not so much a change as a reversion, they've had a cycle of escalation/deescalation for decades. It's just not that sexy anymore.

That being said, it is newsworthy. But so are an awful lot of things that happen in other countries and don't get reported here. And ISIS and the Taliban more than sate the public's appetite for Muslims behaving badly stories.
