I love how notice of termination letters only take effect the first or fifteenth day of the month. How wonderfully anal. I mean, German.

A full month and a half of notice. :bleeding: I'm sure that'll make my upcoming job hunt easier.
Are you looking for another job in Germany? A month and a half isn't long here. Employers expect that so it does not hurt your chances.
Worst I have seen is effective at the end of the following quarter, which can lock you in for almost half a year...

Wait, were you fired or do you want to quit yourself?

Couldn't he still give 2 weeks notice when he gets an offer?

Not likely. The law stipulates four weeks notice as of the 15th or the end of the month. It also lengthens that period for the employer up to seven months (after you've been employed there for more than 20 years).
Collective bargaining agreements or individual work contracts will usually include a longer period of notice for the employee than the minimum four weeks in the law.

I'm leaving. Pretty much made up my mind already. Conditions at the company are quite poor, and it is clear to me now that they are by design. Though why this is the case I can't understand. This is not the kind of job where you want high staff rotation. Basically the problems are long hours (which is normal during commissioning but not for regular office work), frequent and poorly planned travel and a toxic management culture. This leads to people leaving and newbies joining which leads to even more workload/travel/stress in a vicious circle.

Where I go I don't really care. Germany, Spain, UK ... I'll consider any interesting offer.

My German is still really poor, though. The technical staff is made of expats like me, the contractors I oversee speak English and I don't have time to study. This makes it harder to get another job in Germany.
In Spain employee notice can be given with only two weeks, which makes finding a job more complicated there as well.

At least I'm not in a hurry.

The lights come on and the temperature numbers adjust but no light for the hobs themselves and no heat. Bah. Overly fancy modern stuff.
