It just sounds funny to this non-Irish, non-Scot.

"Declan" sounds sort of like a make of car, rather than a first name. Here it is reasonably unusual.

"McManus" has the unfortunate 'McDonalds' ring to it, combined with "anus".

Taken together, it sounds funny to North Americans - probably why he changed it.
Surely though in a Anglo country, even if not Scotland, Mc/Mac names are rather common?
They certainly are in Britain even beyond Scotland.

Certainly they are reasonably common. In fact, "McDonald" is a reasonably common surname.

In English it's roughly:

Deck-lin Mic-Man-ous or Mac-Man-ous

I just realized I'd never posted a map here, and it just wouldn't be Languish without it.

I don't feel like making a new one, so here's probably the best world map I've made.

It is far better for the truth to tear my flesh to pieces, then for my soul to wander through darkness in eternal damnation.

Jet: So what kind of woman is she? What's Julia like?
Faye: Ordinary. The kind of beautiful, dangerous ordinary that you just can't leave alone.
Jet: I see.
Faye: Like an angel from the underworld. Or a devil from Paradise.

I think I shouldn't go on dates. I'm always rather ambivalent afterward. <- the garbon

Certainly. After all, there is nothing funny in India about the name "Ramee Updias", but it sounds unfortunate when pronounced aloud by a Westerner ...  ;)

How about having prime ministers called Wim Kok and Ruud Lubbers for twenty years.
Talk about running a joke into the ground, especially when Ruud Lubbers was accused of sexual harassment.
Thankfully we just stick to Harry Potter impersinators nowadays.  <_<

Ok, I'll bite.  What exactly is this map supposed to represent?

That's nothing compared to the Scandinavian imperial domination of Afghanistan, The Incan colony of Madagascar, and the Egypto-Chili Confederation.

i knew a Mcmanus. he used Mic-Main-Us... but we called him Mic-Anus, or mick the ass. He did not like that.
