Electric is so slow. I miss turning on the heating and getting immediate warmth / don't like all the wrangling you have to do on a stove to be able to switch from boilding to a simmer (as you can't really do that in an instant like you can with gas).

Once again, induction is your friend here.

Great but that's not what is common here.

Indeed, I was only able to get a limited portable induction hob to try it out and then a minor issue with the mains voltage quality fried the bloody thing.  :(

FFS, i live in the countryside with fluctuating voltage and induction works here without issue. WTF is up with the UK?

Insulation is NOT the reason to go with old buildings though.  :D

Our new build is boiling. Yesterday was first day that we put heat on.

Our old build holds heat like a sheet of printing paper.

I watched a UK show about building houses. One dude built a house with proper concrete foundation with 30cm insulation under the concrete and then a normal 20 cm insulation in the walls and I don't remember on the roof. The host acted like he was watching a space ship being built.

The Brain

My impression is that Brits don't "get" houses.

If induction stoves are already an issue, electric cars will fry the grid...

Well, they have to build plugs for their cars first. :P

This is the induction stove I have. Heats water faster than an electric kettle.

Used it much more now due to lock down and I am really happy with it.

V true.

We are indeed warned coming over here to expect that houses off-base/on the economy will be substandard compared to back home.  :P

So Brits are obsessed with being house owners and with their houses' market values, but the houses themselves are crappy?

Threviel

Well, based on british tv then british environmentally friendly high luxury standard is about level with Swedish most basic low standard buildings.

I wish I could have gas hobs. The pipeline is ~100 meters away from my house & I can't get service :(

WHat kind of barbarian civilization doesn't use gas for everything? :alberta:

A building was vaporized by a natural gas explosion in 1962. It traumatized so deep that until the mid 90s almost no new housing development had gas line installation.

Not really, nearly all substantial steel ones will do.

IIRC you have to avoid copper bottomed ones or was that another type?

Yes, you need special pots and pans, but a lot of pots and pans are compatible, even cheap Ikea stuff.
