Germany's constitutional court just allowed assisted suicide in a landmark decision. It was previously basically banned in Germany as the person assisting would violate criminal law.

Their main argument is that humans are free and that part of their freedom is to decide to commit suicide - regardless of any material circumstances such as a terminal disease. There is no valid argument in ideology, religion, medicine or anything else to limit the individual right to suicide. That also means that people are free to assist suicide as everything one free person does may be supported by the free will of another person. The legislative may now still regulate assisted suicide, but only e.g. prescribe mandatory consultation of a doctor or outlawing certain forms of suicide assistance.

I think this is great. With our life expectancy increasing, together with rate of survival of conditions that used to kill you but now "just" seriously deteriorate your life quality, I think it is  high time we adjust our views on assisted suicide and death in general.

Dusting off old Nazi policies. Sure it will be "voluntary", especially if you're handicapped or ethnic.

Bloody hell. Just read a story which on the surface is nothing much but really speaks to the state of the UK and the direction it is heading.
There was a secondary school in Gateshead called Joseph Swan Academy, named for the great local scientist who invented the light bulb.
In recent years, much like the town, it has not been doing so well. It's inspection reports have consistently been awful.
Who should swoop in but emmanuel college. A very shifty evangelical Christian institution infamous for teaching creationism and other such bollocks... But which besides the dodgy science has a lot of money and maintains high exam results.
Bye bye Joseph Swan Academy, hello the new and improved Grace Academy with a new evangelical Christian ethos.
Its like we don't even want to become a decent country again.

Well, the only time the UK was a decent country was from 1939-45, so it's probably best for the rest of the world if the UK remains less than decent.

'We' want them to remain like they were when they were an empire then? Or post-empire?

It was their finest hour.   :bowler:
In Italy, for thirty years under the Borgias, they had warfare, terror, murder and bloodshed, but they produced Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci and the Renaissance. In Switzerland, they had brotherly love, they had five hundred years of democracy and peace—and what did that produce? The cuckoo clock

1972 wasn't particularly a banner year.
