What's the penalty? Over here notice periods exist but the penalty for breaking them is meaningless.

You can be sued for damages.

Yup.

1. The Queen = an office, embodiment of the notion of sovereignty.

2. The Queen = a particular elderly woman who lives in London.

These are quite separate things. You are swearing allegiance to the first, not the second!

In Canada, when you sue the government, you sue "The Queen in right of Canada" (or of a province). The particular elderly lady living in London known as "The Queen" isn't affected by this, and probably will never actually know about it ...

For Americans: "I swear allegiance to the flag". Does this mean to you that you owe your loyalty to a particular piece of cloth?  :hmm:

 "One of these things is not like the other things..."

Sheep "pledge allegiance" for weird reasons, but it isn't anything official or legal.  It's a dumb sales campaign for a flag company that just got out of hand when republicans decided they could use it as a club against "komnists."

My understanding is that this is quite common in UK, and it is indeed a pain in the ass to look for employees, because you have to wait for a long time for them to come over even after they accept your offer.

3 months is quite common in senior positions in the UK. It is only a problem if her corporation is out of line with the others in the UK industry.

It sounds quite horrible to me. She is quite stressed over this but she is going to talk to her manager tomorrow. It is really low form imho to want this changed without any compensation for what is a serious downgrade of the flexibility.

The company is growing quickly there is no real danger of being made redundant so this is not  beneficial to her. If it were they wouldn't try to push it through to begin with

How is it a downgrade of flexibility?  Right now they only have to give her 1 month's notice - now they'll give her three.

This stuff doesn't work both ways in Canada?

No.

Alright this seems messed up: my wife is a senior scientist with a pretty big corporation.

They now announced in a fact-of-the-matter manner that they are raising her (and everyone in her payment grade) notice period from 1 month to 3 months. Initially just saying so in an e-mail but now they want her to sign her acceptance.

I told her she should just flat out refuse, it's ridiculous, how is she supposed to switch jobs with a 3 month notice period?

Is it legal grounds for them to terminate her employment if she refuses a change to her contract?

3 months is the norm in Switzerland. And yes. It sucks.
But its the norm so companies are used to it and changing jobs in Switzerland is still possible.
Escape however is quite impossible.
Having an extra high notice period where it isn't normal  must suck. Though I guess on the bright side the economy is going to hell so the company having to wait 3 months to fire you= yay?

Yes. Ranting about the 1% and their evil deeds is really common among UK members of the 1%  :P

I think they subconsciously write off all those indigent Asians and Africans, surprising for people so woke.
