A lot of celebrities did that in the late 1960s/early 70s, though;  Shatner, Nimoy, Keir Dullea, John Travolta, Phyllis Diller and tons of others.  It's what you did to perpetuate your branding, no matter how embarrassing.

I was just thinking the other day that the cultural icons of my youth are slowly fading away, and I don't seem to be replacing them with anybody.

That's one of the benefits of being gay - you have a lot of cultural icons in their 30s.
