I don't know what the right answer is as far as how many crew you need on a train at minimum, but I am confident that asking the union what that number is won't get you an answer that is informed by anything other than their desire to save jobs.

True.  The company has some consideration of the downsides to downsizing (since they would be the pones paying for the consequences of increased accidents), but I'd not take their naked word, either (since the individual wanting to cut costs might not even have the company's interests in mind).  I'd still trust the company spokesman over the union one on an issue like this.  I'd be the reverse on a worker safety issue.
