I learned today that the French version of 'other fish to fry' is 'other cats to whip', which I found a little alarming.

That certainly is alarming.

Originally, "Menu fretin" is small fish deemed unworthy of fishing, sent back to the sea, it's used nowadays in the meaning of small fry, if you want to stick to fish.
