RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) — The death toll in a massive police raid targeting a drug trafficking gang in Rio de Janeiro rose to at least 121 people, authorities said Thursday.

An operation launched Tuesday in two of the city's favelas sparked intense gunbattles that left at least four police officers dead and an unknown number of people wounded.

Officials raised the death toll from 119 to 121, but further details on the two new deaths weren't immediately available.

Brazil's public defender's office filed a request Thursday with the Supreme Court requesting access to the forensic evidence concerning the police victims. The office reports 130 deaths in the raid, more than the official police numbers.

Well the cops sure gave more than they got. What a bloodbath, even by American standards that is shocking. Hundreds must be wounded for that many to have been killed.

The vibe I get is that the police and military were not interested in leaving gang members alive.  Probably a fair few wounded bystanders, though.

Even by American standards?  Come on, have some perspective.  Cops being thugs in uniform is a rule rather than the exception in much of the world.  By European standards American cops may be a little trigger happy, but to put them in the same sentence with Brazilian cops where extrajudicial executions after arrest are a fact of life?

My apologies, I didn't mean it like that. I meant the scale of the number of people getting killed. We have lots of mass shootings but nothing like that.

Yeah my other thought was unless they were shot execution style and that might have been the case.

Definitely seems like a fuckup by police.  Kill a dozen or two per week, and that's just business as usual in Rio.  Kill 120, and now you have forums in US talking about it.  Definitely not something you want to have happen if you want to keep executing people in peace.

Yeah, before you know it they will start wearing masks and grab innocent people off the street.

My understanding is that the operation was ordered by a local official (mayor / governor ?) to shore up his populist, anti-crime, you-gotta-break-a-few-eggs credentials; so the whole over the top nature of if may very well be intentional.

Though, if the internet can be believed, the guy has plenty of organized crime connections himself just, you know, to different groups than the ones targetted.
