The Minsky Moment

Quote from: grumbler on January 12, 2026, 12:44:38 PMYeah, it raises the question of how the Obama administration deported undocumented aliens at twice the rate of the Trump administration without even having a gestapo of armed masked thugs dressed all in black.

It's an interesting question. Definitely holds for Obama vs Trump 1.  The data is less clear now because the public data has not been updated yet for 2025 and the DHS press releases are vague and unreliable.

However, a likely explanation is that deportation is a legal process.  Thus, a competent administration with competent personnel following the rule of law should be able to deport more people than an incompetent lawless administration.  Trump's DHS has installed terror and fear in the immigrant population - legal and otherwise - and the US citizen population as well.  But that just drives people underground and makes them harder to find.  As we've seen, it has also activated US citizen and documented residents to rally in support of the undocumented population and alert them of ICE presence.

Trump 2025 has secured large numbers of deportation orders, but lots of them are for failing to meet court dates - not surprising given ICE's new MO of camping out and arresting people exercising their due process rights.  Turning those orders into actual deportations is another story.

The Obama administration also staffed regional offices based on need.  The Trump administration has been targeting ICE enforcement based on the physical location of DJT's perceived political enemies.  There are illegal aliens in places like Portland and Minneapolis. But those cities represent something like #15 and #24 in US metro area size and probably do not justify what appears to be a massive diversion of ICE resources.
We have, accordingly, always had plenty of excellent lawyers, though we often had to do without even tolerable administrators, and seen destined to endure the inconvenience of hereafter doing without any constructive statesmen at all.

There was an anti-ICE protest rally and march downtown in Syracuse, NY where I live. It took over 10 minutes for the stream of marchers to get by my building. Hundreds strong if not over a thousand. The numbers keep growing at each of these events.

That's the best way to celebrate 1776 this year, go on a demonstration and get heard.

After the Legal Eagle video YT recommended me a video by Pod Save America (I haven't watched them in a while since they don't really add much to the discussion IMO) that I watched a bit of. It had a video from a guy in a car Minneapolis getting shouted at by an ICE officer to stop following them and that he's impeding their law enforecement. He counters that he lives in the area. The officer keeps yelling at him to go home to his children while another officer stands with drawn gun on the passenger side.

Another clip showed a couple people filming ICE agents (as you do) when one of the ICE agents starts throwing hands at one of the guys. The other agents quickly join (what are they gonna do? they see one of theirs in a fight), take the guy into custody but apparently he was released later.

Another showed a guy in a car, surrounded by armed agents, with one ordering him to drive away and counting down for him to do so. Considering what happened the other day, I would shit my pants in such a situation and probably get shot because I'm confused as to what's expected.

Would be nice if the Americans staged another revolution for the 250th anniversary.

I've given it serious thought. I must scorn the ways of my family, and seek a Japanese woman to yield me my progeny. He shall live in the lands of the east, and be well tutored in his sacred trust to weave the best traditions of Japan and the Sacred South together, until such time as he (or, indeed his house, which will periodically require infusion of both Southern and Japanese bloodlines of note) can deliver to the South it's independence, either in this world or in space.  -Lettow April of 2011

Not all revolutions lead to positive outcomes. Given the changes the magats are making i would say there's something of a revolution going on.

In several surveys, the overwhelming first choice for what makes Canada unique is multiculturalism. This, in a world collapsing into stupid, impoverishing hatreds, is the distinctly Canadian national project.

That link seems to be going to just random reels.

Same thing. Just random reels. Weird.

edit: Checked on my phone, and it went to the reel I figured you had intended. Previously, I had been trying to access it on my pc. Weird.

I'm not watching a 13 minute video about AI slop. Can you summarize its conclusions.
