That would be pretty hilarious.

I'm tempted to place a few bets on the outright winner.  I see 6/1 payouts for Germany winning.  Ditto for Spain.  Iran is at 2500/1, so a $100 bet on them would pay off my house if they win :w00t:

Yi will probably correct my betting terminology-- I usually screw it up.

I'll give you 3000/1 on Iran. But minimum bet is $1000

I will!  It's about time I get some use of these things

I've given it serious thought. I must scorn the ways of my family, and seek a Japanese woman to yield me my progeny. He shall live in the lands of the east, and be well tutored in his sacred trust to weave the best traditions of Japan and the Sacred South together, until such time as he (or, indeed his house, which will periodically require infusion of both Southern and Japanese bloodlines of note) can deliver to the South it's independence, either in this world or in space.  -Lettow April of 2011

So after some polling, the Spiess household is 50% Team USA, 50% Argentina.  I presented all the teams to both kids & asked them to pick their favorites.  Tommy, who apparently has gone hyper-patriotic, went with USA.  He briefly considered Brazil but decided they were "too Brazilian".  Lola only went with Argentina after the wife whispered it into her ear 20 times.

Non-issue since the teams aren't likely to play each other.   But fun dinner conversation nonetheless.

See, that is going to be the downfall of Brazil this WC.
I have come to believe that the whole world is an enigma, a harmless enigma that is made terrible by our own mad attempt to interpret it as though it had an underlying truth.

I asked him to explain what that meant and he mumbled something about the bad guys in the movie Rio

I'm really dreading the Dutch group games.  :(
Just hoping it will be a dignified exit.

Can't wait until the first game of the World Cup because Croatia have a triple pivot of Modric-Rakitic-Kovacic

With no Canada (as if!), not even a Ukraine, I guess after my trip there (and last weekend's reciprocal visit by a couple of nationals) my loyalties lie with... Brazil?

Feels funny pulling for a huge favourite, I almost always pull for the underdog.

Hmmm, if there were only an underdog team from a country that you were close to...  :hmm:

Are the non favourites always underdogs? Or don't you need at least a shimmer of a chance to win to get that title?

EDIT: Not targeted at USA as such. :P

To me an underdog is just anyone not favored to win.
