I once saw Clancy give a speech where he started by saying "The Welfare State killed the Black family".  It went downhill from there.
So if the Welfare State did that, it wouldn't break a sweat bumping off Clancy as well.
Why on Earth would Clancy be giving a speech on that topic or on anything related to it in any way?

He was apparently aiming at political office.  IIRC, he was planning to run for Senator.  He was a member of the Washington Military History Society when I was, and so we had some mutual friends.  It was from them that I got the scoop about him running for office, so take it for what it is worth.
The future is all around us, waiting, in moments of transition, to be born in moments of revelation. No one knows the shape of that future or where it will take us. We know only that it is always born in pain.   -G'Kar

"All men are created equal, then some become infantry."

"Those who beat their swords into plowshares will plow for those who don't."

"Laissez faire et laissez passer, le monde va de lui même!"

"I've never been quite sure what the point of a eunuch is, if truth be told. It seems to me they're only men with the useful bits cut off."
I drank because I wanted to drown my sorrows, but now the damned things have learned to swim.

Can I run for office?

you have too many goat skeletons in the well.
Being lazy is bad; unless you still get what you want, then it's called "patience".
Hubris must be punished. Severely.

Siege

That's a good point.
Not the goats, but you know...
I haven't thought about it.
My perfect record with the US Army is not gonna erase all the past.
You are right, my political enemies would dig up everything I have ever done.
Everywhere I have been, all I have done, and the people I have hanged out with.

Shocking new revelation:  Senator Siege Breaker (RINO, Samaria), has frequented a political extremist site known as Languish.org.  This site has allegedly promoted pornographic furry fan fiction, movie reviews for the lumpen proletariat and the Byzantine Empire.  When ask Senator Breakers office declined to comment.
In Italy, for thirty years under the Borgias, they had warfare, terror, murder and bloodshed, but they produced Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci and the Renaissance. In Switzerland, they had brotherly love, they had five hundred years of democracy and peace—and what did that produce? The cuckoo clock

RINO? He seems pretty convincing to me...

Sometimes you have to compromise your own views in order to be elected.  Samaritans wouldn't vote for a Tea Party Patriot.

I did it.  I killed Tom Clancy.  I'm sorry.   :(
"The internet's completely over. [...] The internet's like MTV. At one time MTV was hip and suddenly it became outdated. Anyway, all these computers and digital gadgets are no good. They just fill your head with numbers and that can't be good for you."

I, said Capetan Mihali
With some sneakers made in Bali
I bludgeoned him in an alley
I killed Tom Clancy
