Isn't that because of the size of the denomination though? If the US was printing lots of $500 bills it might be different.

Exactly so. If you want to physically move $10m in cash then the $100 limit becomes difficult, 100,000 bills take up quite a lot of space. OTOH what normal person buys a beer with a 500 euro note?

50 Euros notes are 14 x 7.7 cm, 500 Euros notes are 16 x 8.2, i.e. 2 cm longer and 0.5 wider. The difference is enough to make sorting notes easy, but 500s are hardly blankets (they make you feel warm and fuzzy, but that's psychosomatic).
