Something like Malwarebytes could be good.  If you buy the pro-version, it has a permanent component, like an AV.  It could help, maybe...  It might slow down his computer, but he's not a gamer, I guess, so it might no be so bad.

Otherwise, use the free version and run it on a regular basis.

Adblock helps too I find, lots of malware seems to be in ads.

Spybot Search & Destroy immunizes your system against a large blacklist of spyware/malware.

Turns out I had Ad-Aware still installed on my computer, forgotten about.  Well, it finally decides to update its definitions.  Immediately after, by sheer coincidence I'm sure, my SearchProtect infection has flared up again, with the annoying random underlined links and shit.     It's not longer forgotten about, I can tell you that.

My mother in law had only @ 600 infections to clean up last time I grabbed her laptop. I may have to do it more often.
