Title: Songs of the Decade
Post by: Eddie Teach on September 17, 2020, 09:36:28 PM
Ok, so I know we're a bunch of old fogeys and finding new music may be less important to us now... Still, I'll ask- which songs recorded since 2010 are your favorites?

My list:
Blackpink- Boombayah
The Killers- The Man
The Weeknd- Star Boy
K Flay- Blood in the Cut
Sunmi- Gashina
Macklemore- Thrift Shop
Billie Eilish- Bad Guy
Gotye- Somebody That I Used to Know
LMFAO- Party Rock Anthem

Pumped Up Kicks - Foster the People
Get Lucky - Daft Punk
Royals - Lorde
Happy - Pharell Williams

None of which are exactly some obscure indie bands.  All major hits.  But still good songs.

The question isn't how many songs do you know from my list. Surely you've heard some songs released in the past decade? Which ones did you like?

Not a song, but one of the most oustanding albums of the last decade for me was Gojira's Magma (2016): https://open.spotify.com/album/7D7V6M05UIOTjLdqbwRX0w?si=pRQgHNDjSmy29W3XIoxv0g

I do check out new releases on Spotify regularly, but it's rare these days that something finds its way into my usual rotation. While browsing I might find an album that I like (I mostly listen to albums, not single songs, except when commuting), but I rarely check the release date. Might be 1987 or 2017.

Waaaaay too many, so I'll list a few from looking at some lists quick:
"Wrecking Ball" - Miley Cyrus
"Dancing on My Own" - Callum Scott
"Let It Go" - Idina Menzel (Not having kids, I still enjoy both soundtracks)
"Bad Blood" - Taylor Swift (You could honestly put the whole 1989 album here. Heck, any Tay Tay from the last decade works)
"Royals" - Lorde
"The Night We Met" - Lord Huron
"Somebody That I Used to Know" - Gotye featuring Kimbra
"Chandelier" - Sia (A fan of most of her stuff)
"The Edge of Glory" - Lady Gaga (Quite a few others, too)
"Pumped up Kicks" - Foster the People
"Bad Guy" - Billie Eilish
"Jar of Hearts" - Christina Perri
"Fight Song" - Rachel Platten
"Take me to Church" - Hozier (Anything by him works, really)
"Hands to Myself" - Selena Gomez
"Try Everything" - Shakira
"Brave" - Sara Bareilles

I might still be too 'young' for this as 2010s starts back when I was 25 so there is a ton of music I listen to still that came out in between then and 2019. Maybe I'll be able to play when looking back at the 2020s. -_-

Haven't really paid attention at all to music made this decade, which is probably a shame.

"Madness" - Muse
"Baby's Arms" - Kurt Vile
"Kill for Love" - Chromatics
"Get Lucky" - Daft Punk
"True love waits" - Radiohead (they started playing it live in the 2000s, though...)
"Blackstar" - David Bowie
"Montains beyond montains" - Arcade Fire
"Monster" - Kanye
"Videogames" - Lana del Rey
"Oblivion" - Grimes

I think most of those are from the early 2010s, even, damn I really need to listen to more current music.

Yep.

Checking my yearly favourites playlist there are about 30-50 songs on each from 2010-2019 so wasn't difficult picking songs for this.

I used to listen to radio a lot (there was a decent indie/rock station where I lived), and up till the 90s MTV, and I used to watch a fair amount of TV, all of which helped a lot with staying current on new music, including outside my preferred genres.

Since downloadable/streamable music became common this changed a lot for me. I do check new releases on Spotify from followed artists and in metal, and the occasional link from here, or Twitter or such, or seek something out when it becomes so ubiquitous that seeps into my perception (like Despacito or Gangnam Style did), but that's about it.

Its hard to remember what is this decade and what is last... This has not been a good decade, the second half in particular. Though the first is even harder to remember....

Public Service Broadcasting- Go, Spitfire...most of their tracks really.
British Sea Power- Machineries of Joy (or others, I'm making myself choose one per band)
Fontaines DC - Boys in the Better Land
Idles- Mother
Arctic Monkeys- Why'd you only call me when you're high?
Omodaka- Plum Song
Parquet Courts- Total Football
Radiohead-  Burn the Witch
Soutaiseiriron - Koi ha hyakunen sensou
The Vaccines- Teenage Icon
Sakert- Dansa Fastan
Miles Kane- Rearrange

Incidentally if you've not run across them before I feel Public Service Broadcasting are very Languish.

I've just googled this and am amazed. Completely missed that they'd done that. Which is odd as I'm a pretty big fan and knew about their documentary soundtracking.
That game has gone up a few notches in my stuff I must play list, it was already vaguely on my radar.

Ok, gave it some more thought and these are some of my earworms in recent times that are from the 2010s; not going to be very mainstreamy, I fear.

Unleash the Archers - Northwest Passage (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XRD3vrSLPaw&ab_channel=NapalmRecords) (yes, it's a cover of the Stan Rogers song, but it still gives me goosebumps, and the intro can get me teary eyed  )
Jinjer - Pisces (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SQNtGoM3FVU&ab_channel=NapalmRecords)
Primordial - Where Greater Men Have Fallen (https://youtu.be/472Qh4l1pFU)
Whispered - Strike! (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qPIPy8sqvHU&ab_channel=Whispered%28Official%29)
Chthonic - Takao (https://youtu.be/e_UkowmQs30) (Made in Taiwan)
Wind Rose - Mine Mine Mine (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gss1LKVQKr0&ab_channel=MusicaVicipaedia)
Gojira - Silvera (https://youtu.be/iVvXB-Vwnco)
Blind Guardian - Wheel of Time (https://youtu.be/wJtFXTIEwYQ) (I listened to the album At The Edge of Time countless times in 2010/11; I've since cooled a bit on it, but I still love this gloriously overproduced track)
Fleshgod Apocalypse - The Violation (https://youtu.be/xjKyzwqIT7s%5B/url) (Always been a fan of merging classical with metal. The drumming on this is on the speedy side - here's a video of their drummer at the time playing this song: https://youtu.be/451KzibdI4w )
P.S.: MYRKUR - Ulvinde (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M9cNZQIzShc&ab_channel=RelapseRecords)

For something less metal and more retro Synthwave:
Perturbator - Future Club (https://youtu.be/RY66fdMt4vc%5B/url)
Magic Sword - In the Face of Evil (https://youtu.be/G02wKufX3nw) (which I only now learned was in Thor - Ragnarok trailer; huh)
Daniel Deluxe - Star Eater (https://youtu.be/QHNakk1oM7g)
Dance with the Dead - Invader (https://youtu.be/1Egf1OZ1CuE)
Gunship - Tech Noir (https://youtu.be/-nC5TBv3sfU) - features John Carpenter as narrator, and fun claymation/VCR action
Lazerhawk - Overdrive (https://youtu.be/SG_0VX2IrNc)
Dynatron - Stars of the Night (https://youtu.be/z5-mD6Dy7c0)
Carpenter Brut - Turbo Killer (https://youtu.be/wy9r2qeouiQ)  (I was surprised when the latest Wolfenstein [the 80s one] used this song in the trailer)

Slightly out of scope of this, but in heavy rotation in the years since release in 2011, Vomitrons masterfully done classic NES metal covers (I was surprised that they were only released in 2011, it feels they're older):
Contra (https://youtu.be/gp4_GcI-atg)
Castlevania (https://youtu.be/bRfVKrC0nfc)
The Legend of Zelda (https://youtu.be/9c_BATLsou8)
Zelda II: The Adventure of Link (https://youtu.be/qkILY7IcjG0)

Edit: Oops, forgot one
Aurelio Voltaire - The U.S.S. Make Shit Up (https://youtu.be/xwhAq3F8NCE) (a shanty about all Star Trek eras to the 2009 movie)

Edit 2: And another one of my favorites I totall forgot:
Sólstafir - Lágnætti (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R8n8Uy5KmvU&ab_channel=SeasonofMist) beautifully moody from Iceland

Edit 3: Shit, this is also from the 10s:
Planet of Zeus - Leftovers (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CfGvtZoDkBk&ab_channel=PlanetofZeusOfficial) - the best Southern rock you can get in *checks notes* Greece

And in game there is at least one nod to other BSP songs. By the way, it's a fantastic RPG (if you like radinig *a lot* of text) with a great soundtrack.

I saw Nick Cave live (in the olden days before COVID) - his stage presence is truly bizarre. He's like some insane preacher of a self-made religion, who started out as a pure fraud but is now starting to half-believe in it.

Well worth seeing if you have the chance.

Edit: though my favorite album by him is from the 90s - "Let Love In". Pure brilliance.

His latest album is pretty amazing too.  It was written after the death of his son and recording was going on when the Bad Seed's keyboardist died.  This track (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PCTevL8OImE) closes the album.
