So how are you doing, what are your plans?

Any mountains to climb?

Running and cycling a bit, in march I have 4 weeks to cycle around Portugal and southern Spain. I'll probably have to climb a mountain or two.

Paternal leave has fattened me up, I'm up to 84 kg (13.23 stone for you brexiters) right now, and that's at least 10 too much.

So last Friday I went running, we have a treadmill in the garage, so the kids were milling around in there with me. And today I ran again.

I have issues with my knees, so I take it easy. Fridays run was 4 km (20 furlongs for..) and today was 3 km (meh, you can convert for yourself). I also did some exercise with the exercise ball. That is brutal for my stomach muscles, but again, I take it easy.

My plan is to be in better shape when it's time for our motor home trip. It would be nice to go jogging and also to buy some clothes. And there's a 10 km run with my work in August, would be nice to do that comfortably under the hour so I try to keep 6 min/km. (about 17000 furlongs/fortnight)

I am keeping a decent weight (81kg) mostly by minimising carbo-intake (within reason). This year I'll need to supplement it with ample cardio as my fitness is lacking and I think I am getting to the age where my heart starts suffering for it.

I run about 3 km 4 times a week on my threadmill. It's been a year since I've started to run the improvement has been substansial but my feet still ache while running. Shins are getting better but will have difficulty if I push the speed up to high.

Learning how to run when you are over 30 isn't easy for the body or the mind.

(I have lost no weight, don't care to. Muscle - Fat offset has kept me at 180lbs.)

I have issues with my knees, so I take it easy.

Beginning to feel that as well and was shown a technique to lessen the strain on the knees. It's basically a faster cadence and lifting the knees a bit more, it makes you land on the front of the foot instead of the heel and it takes some of the shock absorption from the knee. It's bloody hard on the lungs though. :P

I've heard about that, if they get worse I will have to learn it. If I take it easy on the treadmill my knees aren't too bad. I run with a 1 or 2 degrees upward slope all the time. We have a very nice gravel road in the forest just behind my house, a 5 km run with about 140 height meters. It's very beautiful and one sometimes gets to see wild animals. I once rounded a corner and ran into a family of elks lying down having a rest. I went full Usain Bolt the other way.

But I can't really run it regularly, the downward slope absolutely kills my knees.

I have a not very good mountain bike and also I sometimes cycle with the kids on a trailer behind. It's just that I find cycling so very boring. To get the same exercise as running I have to spend more time on something that is absolutely mind-numbingly boring.

That said, I am trying to convince the wife of our need for an exercise bike in the garage. Slow progress so far.

You need an exercise bike where there's a TV. :) I find it helps. It is absolutely boring to sit on a stationary bike

Yeah, I usually listens to podcasts or something. I find that it helps to have something to think on when on the treadmill, otherwise I just keep looking at the clock.

I think the problem here is regarding it as an extra onerous task you have to do.

A  better approach is to integrate it into one's daily life, be that sometimes cycling to work, doing some local shopping, visiting a friends, going down the pub etc.

So that it's just another mode of transport, which happens to get you fitter as an added bonus and will probably save you money, occasionally even saving some time if your local road traffic is anything like it is here.

I'm back to 110 Kg  <_<

I've been extremely sedentary these past 3 months and put on a lot of weight - job has been very intense. I started a proper diet and I'm back going to the gym regularly, so hopefully there will be progress.

Weight has never been an issue for me (~145 pounds since high school), but I'd say I'm pretty out of shape in general. I intend to start with light weightlifting and regular hiking again as soon as the temperature improves.

Has anyone had any experience with a home rowing machine or something similar?

I'm actually just reusing the same diet I used to shed 10 Kg 3 years ago. It worked a treat. It's mostly based around veggies/lowfat meats/fish. But yeah, there's a plan for what I'm going to eat every day of the week, calorie counting... the whole shebang.

I had high hopes for 2018 to be a year of glowing, svelte vigor and manliness but I had a few injuries in June that arrested that. 2019 and I'm starting out from a fairly shabby position fitness wise, so just trundling around the local park twice a week right now, 3 miles at a positively stately 10 minute pace. Bike rides are an hour about once a week. I'll aim to steadily increase both pace and distance of these activities in the months ahead. I'll also add some resistance training, using bodyweight - I have one of those phone apps that coaches you (and it's a real fucker) and got some great results last year.

Diet wise I've been pretty decent for several years, high on the fruits and veg, not a lot of meat or processed food. Lots of room for improvement on the sugar front. I get my bloodwork done once a year and apparently look great on paper for a 48 year old.

I'm presently 185 pounds*. I'd like to be back to the 170 I was about 4 years ago, so that's a big goal for the year. I have stopped eating at night, which has already helped tremendously.

I exercise for mental health primarily, and vanity secondly. Third, for longevity. Everything I've read about ageing gracefully says "exercise, low weight, good diet, low stress, rest, water" and the more of all of those the better one is controlling ones controllables.

I have become a lot more interested in resistance training in recent years, which has huge benefits for mental health and ageing apparently. Haven't actually done much though.

* not sure what free market Murican pounds are in EU-Commie-Nazi socialist-serf weight measuremnts.

I don't know yet...my girlfriend signed up for her first half marathon and so I signed up with her...it is in a month. Every half marathon I've run has been between 1:50 and 1:55...I thought...it would be nice to break 1:50 finally...only then I did a super flat 12.5 mile training run and felt quite beat up and was at a 1:58 pace...it won't be easy to just get back under 1:55, and no way I'm breaking 1:50.

So for at least the next month I guess I'm focusing on getting under 1:55?

A bigger goal will come along.

Well that's still quite impressive AR, for an first off go and you've yet to get back into it.

For you next big goal, what about one of those desert run marathons in North Africa?  :)

edit:
Seriously, what about taking up that canyon ravine running/climbing thing, seems to be an up and coming sport and you've got all the skills and the right mental attitude to plough on through.

I can't run a marathon...when I used to focus more on running, I tried hard to do one, with a maximum time of 4 hours (no interest in run/walking). I pushed my runs out to 16 miles, but it was excruciating - like I could barely walk the next day. I don't know what it is, but my body seems to break down if I run more than about 14 miles. The limitation isn't cardio--it is physical. I've talked to a couple doctors and there may be a hip issue...both recommended I go to a sports medicine place to figure it out but I haven't done so.

I really enjoy climbing and hiking more than running anyway. But someday I plan to figure out the marathon thing.

Last week I hit a new PB for a static bench press lift of 415 lbs. and all my other weights have increased accordingly.  Had to stop doing deadlifts though.  I really need to strengthen some of my supporting muscles more and so still doing RDLs for that.  The sitting disease continues to be a real killer for me though on that front.  Also I need to find a trainer who knows the mechanics of doing the lift properly for a tall person.

Over all I have hit a plateau for weight loss at 255.  My waist line continues to shrink though and so I put that down to building more muscle mass.  But I would still like to get down to the 240s by May.  More intense cardio is in my future and when the weather warms up I can start biking to work again.

I have been eating a more protein rich plant based diet along with eggs and fish.  It has the benefit of being both delicious and healthy but I still eat meat ever once and a while.  No matter how good it is for me and the environment to avoid, I still like a good steak every few weeks.  And when I do have it, it tastes especially good.  :D

The "sitting disease"?

When I do 400+ lb deadlifts I can barely walk the following two days. I probably should isolate them and not do other leg stuff that day, maybe move it to back day...

I believe he's talking about the prevalence of sitting down all day, 8+ hours, while in an office environment.

I am very lucky that my office has standing desks for every employee. I try to use it as much as possible.

My doctor, a lovely fellow, regards what I do for a living - waiter- quite highly for this reason. Scampering about constantly, bending , reaching, crouching and so on. The current place, very fancy has three floors so I've added dashing up and down stairs in the last 18 months as well.

My Doctor is a former waiter though, so it could be bias.

I've never been this fat (~10 kg overweight). I've tried to switch to a diet with more veggies, but it invariably ends in significant intestinal pain.  :pinch:

I've started going out on the bike and swimming, but as mentioned by others, I find it really boring. Can't realistically bike my way to work either, since it'd be a two hour trip each way.

If weight is the only issue you could try weight watchers or a calorie counter. I had a lot of success with that and I didn't have to change what I ate.

Hence, ran out of gas on Sunday's long run at the 22 km mark. :P

I was out with the chainsaw in the forest all day yesterday and today I went running for 5 km. It feels hard on my old broken body, but spirits are high. I was only going to run for 30 mins, but it actually felt good to exhaust myself, so I ran for 5 minutes more to the 5 km mark.

I try to increase the speed with 0.2 km/h every time I run and so far so good.

I'm teasing and bragging. I did hit 25 K in late December, before winter really started.

I'm trying to build up to making a true marathon possible. But I have never made my body run for 4 hours, only 2 and a half. It's hard to scale up.

I've never seen the point of stretching, the only result I've observed is occasionally pulling a muscle while doing it.
Stopped doing it years ago, except halfhearted attempts at spinning class out of politeness.

There's plenty of research supporting the idea that stretching is fairly useless. Unless the point is becoming more flexible, of course.

Wouldn't more flexibility help with injuries though? Lessens the risk of pulling a muscle or a ligament or something?
Title: Re: Fitness? 2019 thread

Apparently increased muscle flexibility doesn't necessarily translate to better performance or reduced risk of injury. But opinions are very divided on the subject.

For me, keeping my muscles warm for a couple of hours after a hard workout is much more effective than stretching. To each their own, I guess.
Title: Re: Fitness? 2019 thread

Regarding stretching I admit I do very little of it (5-10 minutes after weightlifting), and I've never had muscle injuries of any kind - I used to have lots of back troubles but those have mostly gone away since I started exercising regularly.

Maybe I'll regret it when I'm older, dunno.

I'm really adamant about stretching after a really hard run. My anecdotal experience is that it dramatically reduces soreness the next day.

Pre exercise, i do very light stretching - like 45 seconds unless i find some thing is unusually tight. Basically just to figure out if everything is okay. Unless I'm doing something that is going to be super explosive, I don't see the point. If I am doing something super explosive, then I do the same activity at an easier rate to warm up.

Most people do it wrong, so I am not surprised by anecdotal stories about it not helping.  There was once a time when static stretching was primarily used (and that is what I see a lot of people still doing).  That is now recognized as not beneficial and dynamic stretching is the way to go.  The purpose of stretching pre workout is to get the blood (and oxygen) moving to the parts of your body you are about to put strain on.  After the workout the purpose is to maintain flexibility.  Both are important to maintain range of motion and reduce risk of injury.

Apparently increased muscle flexibility doesn't necessarily translate to better performance or reduced risk of injury. But opinions are very divided on the subject.

Not really.  There is agreement about the benefits of dynamic stretching.

I don't stretch myself and like Maladict I don't see the point. But i haven't  heard about this dynamic thingy. Any good reading up links?

Today I fixed up my old mountain bike. The gears don't run perfect, but the rear wheel gears are smooth and I can get it into any gear with some work. The issue is in the "gear handle" and it's to fragile to open and fix.  I'll see if I can get it out a few times, running is hard on the knees.

It really depends on what activity you are warming up for.

The other advantage is, for a large range of athletic activities, moving from static to dynamic stretching increases performance.  Since you don't stretch that won't mean much to you but it indicates the difference between the two.  I first learned about it when my boys started doing their athletics at a high level and one of their coaches explained to me that static stretching before a game actually decreased vertical over a short period of time.

I do dynamic stretching prior to a workout tailored to what the actual workout is. Once the main workout is done, I do static passive stretching.

2-3 times a week I do PNF stretching after static passive stretching.

CC you are correct. Dynamic before and static passive stretching after.

For the nonstretchers;
https://www.webmd.com/fitness-exercise/features/new-ideas-on-proper-stretching-techniques#1

Basically;
Warm-up: Joint rotations etc.
Dynamic stretching
Main workout
Cool Down: Static passive stretching
PNF or also called Isometric stretching optional after cooldown.

There is truckloads of research that's been out there for decades.

For the nonstretchers there are basically these categories of stretching;

Static Passive
Static Active
Dynamic
PNF
Ballistic

I do a bit of dynamic before working out, and a bit of passive after. But it's really little, like 5 minutes each block, if even that.

I also had this trainer that made me stretch the relevant muscles/joints after each series, but I was never too sure of that to be honest.

I do that for my shoulders when I do lifts that directly engage them. It's not much, just a few seconds, but I find it really helps keep the mobility and avoid stiffness and pain in the joint.  I also do dynamic stretching in between squats at the squat rack, each set gets better in terms of my mobility and getting ass to grass.

I've been running on the treadmill and also cycling with the mtb in the forest. It's absolutely awful, I could barely walk afterwards, so apparently I need the training.

I've also been doing some exercise with a big ball, situps and stuff like that. Also horrible, my stomach was convulsing for days afterwards, so apparently I need the training.

I've come to the conclusion that I am in quite bad shape, but no injuries yet, so the training continues.

After 15 years of stormy relationship, my aunt is finally getting married (it's the third time she announces it, but now it looks for reals).

Since I'm her closest male relative, I'm to be the best man. That means I have two months to find a way to fit in my suit...

Also maybe a case of 'a change is as good as a rest'?

AR, well you know what I mean, I find trying to do too much of one thing can be a bad idea, so this year I'm scalling back on the amount of bike riding I do. :gasp:

Well, at the end of the day, I'm a shit runner and always have been (I assume you are the same regarding cycling, if the comparison is to top guys, no offense  :P).

The best runners are putting in more mileage in a week than I would in just about any month, even when I focused on training, and they usually have a morning and evening run. I'm confident that with a proper amount of preparation, that is the best way to get positive results (obviously a guy off the couch is going to be crippled with injuries if jumping into such a program).

I'm not going to do that. However, if I'm going to spend say 5 hours a week on exercise, while really good runners may be putting in a dozen just running, I'm getting better results by not devoting 100% to running. Which is probably reasonable considering the top runners are doing more than just running as well, even if that is the emphasis.

I'm just a bit surprised I set a PR because i didn't shift my training with running in mind, but to shift my focus to climbing.

I'm back to 110 Kg  <_<

I've been extremely sedentary these past 3 months and put on a lot of weight - job has been very intense. I started a proper diet and I'm back going to the gym regularly, so hopefully there will be progress.

Down 2kg in 1 month. So far so good. I guess I'll be able to get to 104 Kg relatively fast - I've been hovering around that weight for the past 2-3 years. After that, it's always been a brick wall.

But I'm determined to make this they year where I go back to double figures.

A new study to encourage us in or approaching middle age, to keep up our fitness programs - taken from the NYTimes

QuoteNot surprisingly, those men and women who had been sedentary throughout their lives were the most likely now to have died, particularly from heart disease.

But those people who always had been active, exercising consistently for a few hours a week, were about 30 to 35 percent less likely to have passed away from any cause and about 40 percent less likely to have died of a heart attack than the consistently inactive people.

More buoying, people who had stopped exercising for a decade or two but begun again during their 40s or 50s, working out then for a few hours a week, shared the same relative protection against premature death as the people who always had exercised.

On the flip side, people who had been active and in shape as teenagers or young adults but sedentary in middle age seemed to lose any longevity benefits. They were as likely as the always-inactive group to have died.

I generally use hybrid bikes, currently one I bodged up out of spare bits, has 28 mm tyres, probably put on some armoured 32 mm later for better going on off-road section.

If I'm using trains a fair bit, I'll stop taking a hybrid and take the folder.   :bowler:

I've had this weird cold for a few weeks. There wasn't much sneezing or runny noses, but I've been extremely tired. It hurts in my muscles to do the slightest thing. It has slowly been getting better and now I think I'm ready to start exercising again.

I started by going to the sawmill yesterday. During the winter I've felled the trees that the drought has damaged and yesterday it was time to saw it up into timber. I plan on building a small workshop in an old fashioned way, doing my own windows and everything else out of wood. Some dude not far from here has a small sawmill so we went there. I can tell you it's hard work sawing, pulling the trees onto the table, righting them up correctly with the saw and then turning them around a few times before it's done.

So today I'm hurting all over, good exercise for the entire body.

So, fitness goals and accomplishments for 2019 (so far):

* Lost all accumulated weight from dating sedentary guy (above and beyond his 180 pounds ;) )
             - Down 20 pounds from December 2018
             - Another 30 pounds to go (hopefully before December 2019)
* Back to walking 35-50 miles a week
* Calories are very low right now, but I've figured out through trial and error how many net calories I need to maintain weight going forward. so once I'm at goal weight, I should be good so long as I'm careful
* No longer "obese" by the BMI scale - just overweight
* Waist-to-hip ratio still sucks (and in fact, is worse because I've lost a lot of the extra padding on my hips/bottom)

I am in a comfortable groove with my workouts now.  I bench 225 twice a week and in one of those days also add in a static lift set of 405.  One day is devoted to dead lifts and RDLs.  The other days I do a range of strength and flexibility exercises.  Most days I finish off with a few sets of ropes.

Friday is my rest day :)

The BMI scale is pretty bad.  According to it I have always been obese - even when I was playing ball. It doesn't take muscle mass into account.

A rare day today, this evening I cycled twice as far as the tour de france stage, usually this only happens 2 / 3 times a tour, that is on one of the time trials and the two rest days.  :D

Ran 25K for the first time since early winter. It took me 2 1/2 hrs, with water breaks and traffic lights. Felt good. If I could only make 30....

Now have beer and a cavernous stomach.

Are you looking to do a marathon, Sask?

I'm thinking that starting in December, I'm going to try to do a 5k a month, and finish the year with a half-marathon. That'll give me just over 50 miles run in competitions in my 50th year. :D

Yes. But 42 K is a long way to run. Eventually. Once.

Go for the half! It's a good distance.

yep. lots of people do this. Here's one 12 week plan: https://www.runnersworld.com/uk/training/half-marathon/a25887045/beginner-half-marathon-training-schedule/

Note that it has lots of rest days, which are important.

A half-marathon. Yikes! I'd probably croak in the first km.

Though I finally decided to get on the waiting list to fix my minor congenital heart condition, so that might not necessarily hold true in a year or so. Can't say I'm looking forward to being perfectly awake while they do their stuff.  :XD:

I just did a 10k in 49:14...someday i want to get down to ~45 minutes but I don't want to put in the work so...

I'm backing off running a bit to focus more on strength training and rock climbing. We will see what happens the next 6 months.

Pain was not bad at all. Just fatigued. Woke up and went on a slowww 60K bike ride, which had many breaks and took me 5 hours.

My best 10K was 46:30. I also did a 8k in 39:01. But those were a few years ago. I haven't been in a chip race for a few years as I'm usually just running for the zen.

Not doing a whole lot of exercise these last few days, so much so I had to go and do 25 miles on the bike yesterday, simply to ward of the aches, pains and stiffening that comes with old age.  :(

It seemed to work; use it or lose it, I guess.

Don't worry, mongers. I'm doing enough for both of us right now.

I'm still walking between 7-10 miles a day, plus I've added 50-100 squats a day. Yesterday, I did all of that and went kayaking for 90 minutes.

Down to 155; only 20 more to go. My waist is still making me mad, but I've added the squats to build up some tush to help with that hip-to-waist ratio my doctor keeps yammering on about.
Title: Re: Fitness 2019 thread
Post by: merithyn on August 20, 2019, 02:59:35 PM
I'm so frustrated.

I've lost 30 pounds and five inches off my waist, and I'm *still* considered high-risk because my hip-to-waist ratio is still well above the desired 0.80 at 0.88. I still have another 20 pounds or so to lose, but even so, this is getting really old.

To date, I'm averaging around 7.5 pounds lost per month. Another three months, and I'll be at goal. Maybe then that stupid ratio will finally be "healthy". :(

Status report, gang! How are you doing?

I'm not walking as much as I was doing, primarily because I'm busy with moving my son out of the apartment and rearranging things, so a lot of moving crap. Great cardio, anyway. Still walking around five miles a day, but not the 7-10 I aim for.

What about you guys? Sticking with your exercise plans?

Yep. I look down at my still-not-unsubstantial belly and go, "Oh damn. Time to walk another three miles."

It's really driving home how big I must have been. I mean, once I hit my goal weight, I will have lost 50-55 pounds. On a 5'2" frame - however larger boned and muscular - that's not an insignificant amount of weight. There's a level of shame in that, too. :(

I have, by definition, something called Metabolic Syndrome, which means I'm apple shaped and will die young unless I get my shit together. Even then, the chances of getting off the meds are slim to none.

I got my EKG results today and it showed a pulse of 46!

I'm so happy about it - I know it is a weird thing to be happy about, but before I went to the doctor I was kind of sad and explained to my girlfriend that I wanted to have a pulse under 50 but I wasn't going to register something so low. When I went for my physical, I walked into the doctor's office and the first thing the nurse did was put a reader on my finger and take my pulse. I registered 72--I tried to quickly relax, but I had just walked in (and not long before up stairs) and I think that elevated my heart rate.

For the EKG though I was laying on a bed for a few minutes.

Two weeks ago, I started walk/running three miles every other day. I've signed up to do a 5k on Thanksgiving with my sister, and she's been running one 5k a month all year. I'm hoping not to embarrass myself.

At this point, I'm walking 1/4 mile/running 1/4 mile for 3 miles. This week, I'm going to try to up it to walk 1/4 / run 1/5. Wish me luck!

Oh, on the weight front: still have 20 pounds to lose. I gained three pounds when I first started running, but it's going down again now. Not too stressed over the weight gain since it's probably muscle, but I still have this obnoxious bulge at the top of my stomach that will not go away.  <_<

Awesome! Some research shows that people have climbed the face of it...though I can't find a lot of documentation on a route with a difficulty. A 2k foot vertical wall is a time consuming expedition--I've done 800-900 feet, but with the approach and descent it takes ~12 hours typically. For someone like me (assuming the climbing isn't too difficult) this would be multiday, which isn't something I've done before. Maybe in a few years, but hauling the gear to and around Nigeria for a multiday climb is daunting...

You can hike up the backside...I was in Nigeria for work a few years ago...had I known about this I might have done it over the weekend.

Yea, broken is different than sprained. Ya kind of need that digit in jujitsu. Last week after class we were around and ended up rolling my left big toe on the mat. All I heard was crunch crunch. Was a big split going across the top of the nail. It was deep too, but kind of interesting looking.

nails grow back.  :bowler:

Marshaled a 5 K race this weekend for teen suicide prevention. All these little kids running, so cool. (5K is yuge for those little legs.) And I got a free toque.

Ran tonite, after work, after a nap. Was good.

In contrast I did about 2.6miles of 'power walking' tonight on various errands about town.  :bowler:

I ran a 5k turkey trot this morning. Just got my official time: 37:01. Ranked 43 out of 63 for my age division, and since two weeks from tomorrow I'd age into the next division, I can guess that I was the eldest in my division. I'll take it!

Well, according to my doctor, my pain tolerance is too high. I walked around with a broken thumb for a weekend, putting Voltarene on it because "it wasn't so bad".

Yea, broken is different than sprained. Ya kind of need that digit in jujitsu. Last week after class we were around and ended up rolling my left big toe on the mat. All I heard was crunch crunch. Was a big split going across the top of the nail. It was deep too, but kind of interesting looking.

I never understood why an opposable thumb was such a big deal, until I couldn't use one of my two thumbs.

Probably looks worse than it felt? Still, someone had to mop up all the blood.

Good class today, but I still stay away from sparring. Working on core strength instead.

Six miles in snow and freezing rain. It's sneezy out. Only two other runners seen. Snow gave good traction in the valley, where there was wind cover. Best run in weeks.

End of year accounting!

I can't find a start of year post, so it must have been during one of my Languish breaks. Anywho, this is my 2019 by the numbers:

Jan 1 2019
Weight: 185 lbs.
BMI: 32.8 (Obese)
Chest: 42"
Waist: 39"
Hips: 42"
Thighs: 24"

Dec 31 2019 (or therabouts)
Weight: 153 lbs. -32 lbs
BMI: 27.1  (Overweight) -5.7
Chest: 40"  -2"
Waist: 34"   -5"
Hips: 38"     -4"
Thighs: 22"  -2"

I can now run a 5k without stopping and walk 20 miles in a day with minimal pain. Not bad for an old lady. :)

She is in good shape.  When she was here we went for a shortish hike with one steep hill.  At the top I was panting like a dog - she was perfectly fine.

No offense, cc, but you do have a lung condition. ;)

I'm doing okay, though. On my trip, I regularly took the stairs instead of an elevator (until I got sick), and I managed to climb two mountains. So, you know, not bad. :D
